There are many reasons behind a laptop could get frozen, it may be caused either by a software problem or hardware malfunction. If is a software problem, you can use troubleshooting software to solve it, but if it is hardware related, then maybe you have to buy few parts or replacement part for your laptop.

Hi @somerandomdude1234,
A faulty memory card is one of the most common causes of computer freezes. So before you invest in a new computer, check to see if your memory card is at fault. Microsoft has a built-in tool to help you do this. 1) On your keyboard, hold the Windows logo key and press R at the same time to invoke a Run command.

First of all, we need to determine whether it is a hardware or software issue. Here are some of the steps to speed up your computer. It will help on the freezing issue.Try windows + r - on the run window - type msconfig - click okclick on servicescheck - hide all microsoft servicesclick on disable allclick on startupdisable all the startup itemsclick on apply - ok - restart the computer. Loading process will be very fast now..Note: You can always enable the services and startup items later or set it to normal startup from selective startup later on the General tabTry windows + r - on the run window - type appwiz.cpl - click okit will show you the list of programsremove all the unwanted third party programs. Please don’t remove any drivers. If you are not sure , please don’t remove it.Try windows + r - on the run window type temp - click ok - it will show you the bunch of files - try ctrl + a - select all files - press the shift key and click on delete filesTry windows + r - on the run window type %temp% - click ok - It will show you the bunch of files - try ctrl + a - select all files - press the shift key and click on delete filesIf you are not able to remove some files - click on skip and then click click on continue..Try windows + r - on the run window - type cleanmgr - click okclick on all the boxes except recycle bin and thumnailDelete the items which are checkedTry windows x - on the menu - chose command prompt admin or power shell adminclick on yeson the blue or black window type sfc /scannowIt will be running till 100 %Try to do a chrome resetopen chromeclick on three dots on top right cornerclick on settingsScroll down - go to advancedclick on restore setting to defaultyou will see reset settings - cancelclick on reset settingsOpen chromeit will work faster nowIf it is still not working then we have to do a refresh and resetclick on start - settings - update and security - recovery - reset this pc - get startedoron start - type here to search - type reset this pc - click on reset this pc on the top - click on get startedIt will show you keep my files and remove everythingchose keep my fileschose the account - type the password - click on local reinstall - click on resetIt will be in progress..login to computer and start using the computer. If it is still not workingclick on start - settings - update and security - recovery - reset this pc - get startedchose remove everythingclick on local reinstall - just remove my files - click on resetIt will be in progressNote:If you do refresh ( keep my files ) - all your personal files like pictures, music , documents , videos will still be intact. Only the applications will be lostIf you do reset ( remove everything ) - you are doing a factory default. It will become like a day one computer. It will wipe out everything and take your computer to day one like a new computer. You can also do the recovery in an alternative way..There are two alt keys on the keyboard. If you look at the bottom row of keyboard you can see the one on the left side of space bar and the other on the right side of space bar. The alt key on the right side will be looking like alt, alt gr or alt car. Turn off the computer. Hold the alt key on the left and tap f10 continuously. It will go to repair mode. It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot. If it is not going to repair mode, turn off the computer. Turn on the computer. Hold the right alt key ( alt gr or alt car or alt ) and then tap f10 continuously. It will go to chose an option continue and troubleshoot..It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshootGo to troubleshoot - click on reset this pcclick on keep my files ( only applications will be lost ) chose your account and type your password - click on local reinstall - click on resetIt will be in progressIf the keep my files option is not workingGo to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – just remove my files – click on resetIt will reinstall windows. If the just remove my files is not working..Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – Fully clean the drive – click on resetIt will reinstall windows.Note: You can also go to chose an option , continue , troubleshoot by holding the alt key + tapping f10 or alt gr + tapping f10 on the keyboard while turning on the computer. Once you see the troubleshoot option, you can stop tapping the f10 and stop holding the alt key. Then you can try the keep my files and remove everything ( just remove by files and fully clean the drive ) by following the steps which was mentioned above.
After doing the factory reset, computer will work fine..

Overheating may be caused from dust buildup on fan blades and heat sinks which might be removed by alternately vacuuming the air intake vents and blowing air into the air exhausts vents usually on the bottom cover. The air intake vents are directly over the fan blades.

Have the same issue, tried all troubleshooting steps in the replies below your message, and more, to no avail. it now freezes up two minute after switching on and is unuseable. Did you find a solution to this problem, as again, I'm in your same boat. Very disappointed, the laptop is barely three months old and looks pristine, hope it won't be returned looking like garbage.

I reported the freezing problem years ago but never got a response, though mine is a little different, so maybe you can help me. I have an Aspire E-15 laptop with Windows 10 (Microsoft version installed over the Win 8.1 that came with the machine).
Randomly, the screen and cursor will lock up. After a minute, the CPU fan spins loudly, so apparently it's overheating. I have to hold the power button for several seconds to shut off the unit. After a minute or so I can reboot. Practically 100% of the time, it was caused by Windows trying to update. I know this because, after I restart the machine, when I go to Check for Updates, there's always a Windows Defender security update available to install.
I've run the Update Troubleshooter and it found no problem. Is there any other solution for this problem?
This has happened so many times, I'm surprise the laptop is not damaged. If I am away from the computer (in another room, for example) and don't happen to hear the loud CPU fan so I can shut it down, what would happen? Would the unit burn up or just shut itself off?
Note: The freeze up for me is during use (usually an important task like creating a document, of course), not at startup. It seems to be triggered by Defender trying to update.
Thanks.

Who did you report it to? If it was on any of these forums, you can find it by clicking on your profile and checking in the archived threads that you started.
A frozen state will eventually automatically throttle power to the CPU or shut down by itself if processor temperature reaches a potentially damaging level called the processor hot or ProcHot state.
If the laptop is not raised about an inch above a hard surface to promote air flow —- or If the bottom cover has never been removed to clean the vents, fan blades & enclosure, ductwork to the CPU heasink —- it's not unusual for freezes to happen frequently.

Thanks for the info. I 'll check that out. But as I said it seems to only happen when a Windows security update is trying to occur.

Installing updates = more CPU usage. More CPU usage = more heat.
