Hi, i am very new to the pc world, just got this thing yesterday. I am very happy with how it performs. However, looking at the system temps and what not in Predator Sense I noticed that my CPU Temp is up around 80-83 when basically idle. Is this normal? is it high? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

In my opinion idle temp over 50C is too high, even if the ambient temp is closer to 30C. Most often high idle temp is caused by a bad contact between the heatsink (cooler) and the CPU. It could be that someone at the production line did a bad job when he applied thermal paste.

    You have few options.
    • You can take your brand new PC back to the store and tell them about your concerns. Depending on the store, maybe they can check that there is enough thermal paste between the cooler and the CPU and repaste it for you.
    • If you have a friend or relative who likes to tinker with computers, he could remove the cooler and apply new layer of thermal paste. Ask him to bring some thermal paste with him when he comes.
If the temp is still too high after this, you may want to consider buying an aftermarket cooler for your PC. I know this sounds very stupid, especially when your PC is brand new, but unfortunately Acer decided to save few bucks and that's why the original cooler in your PC isn't that good.

This forum has many posts how to swap coolers. Most common cooler seems to be Noctua NH-U9S. Here (LINK) is just one of the discussions with noce pictures. It might look intimidating at first, but it is actually not that hard to do.

    Hi there again!

The easiest temporary fix is to change "Maximum processor state" from 100 to 99. At least on Win 10 this setting can be found in Power Options => Change Advanced Power Settings. Changing this setting will limit how high your CPU will boost, so the performance will take a hit.

Another easy fix is to do a repaste job. Thermal pastes like Arctic MX-4 or Noctua NT- H1 are not that expensive.

It's possible that the cooler isn't flush with the CPU. The only way to know for sure is to remove the cooler and reinstall it, but to do this you need thermal paste. When the cooler is removed you can see whether the original paste covers the whole CPU die or not and if it's evenly spread. Clean the surfaces, apply new paste and reinstall the cooler.

If the idle temp is still too high, check that the fans and actually spinning.

Did your PC come with metal and glass side panels? Using metal one with vents should lower the temps by few degrees.

Yes, it came with the glass panel installed, and with a metal one with vents as well. Should i change that out?

Just as additional advice, as I’ve just got a Nitro brand new laptop and its idle temps never ever go above, cpu of 45°C and gpu idle of 35°C! Your temps of "80°-83°C when basically idle" are too high, don't touch your laptop and get either your retailer to change the laptop for another one but test the exchanged laptop first and its temps before you exchange your old laptop (if they will do that?) if not then urgently send your laptop to Acer and get them to test and/or repaste the cpu/gpu properly, as it must not have enough paste or has faulty thermal parts or other problems that are causing these high temps.

Note: if you are having high temps like you are with a brand new laptop then temps will not get better but worse and to a stage of this laptop turning off due to its cpu/gpu’s reaching their max temps and being unusable! Be warned as your laptop is faulty and should NOT be reaching those temps for a brand new laptop!

Needless to say, your Predator Orion 3000 isn't a Nitro laptop. :) 80-85C temperature while idle are way to high, 80-85C temperatures while running a game is much closer to normal. You don't need to shoot for idle temps of 30C, but 50-60C is reasonable. My system, which is running a browser, email client and a background spreadsheet as I type this has all cores in the upper 50s, and they can hit 90C when running games. I don't consider that overheating, since the fans aren't even supposed to get to max speed until 90C.
