I am having issues connecting my Acer Spin 3 to wireless at 5G.  The laptop was purchased in 2017 or 2018.  We have ATT fiber Gig Wireless router installed.  My laptop gives message "your connection is unstable" when using Zoom.  The ATT Router Home Management display shows 2 red bars on the wireless status for my Spin3 at 5G.

After PC reboot, connection showed 3 green bars  at 2.4 GB and connectivity seemed ok on my Zoom call last night.  Today, the PC is back to 2 red bars at 5G.

If I need a new network card to support the 5G wireless, which net card should I purchase?

Something is wrong with the ATT app if it sees the Spin is broadcasting at 2.4GHz when Spin's Device Manager has in fact limited to 5GHz broadcasting. Uninstall or at least disable m al byte s if possible. WindowsDefender and MaliciousSoftwareRemoval tool are all most users need nowadays anyway and it may be confusing the ATT app.

There are many spin 3 2-in-1 models. If your's is the SP314-51 model, it should in fact support 5GHz better than 2.4GHz. Try this. Open Device Manager. Click network adapters folder. Right click properties wlan or wifi adapter. Click advanced tab. Click preferred band. Change preference to 5GHz. Click OK. Shut down Windows normally. Turn machine back on and test.

Followed your excellent suggestions.  I have the SP314-51 model and modified the wireless adapter setting to 5G.  When I look at the ATT Gig router status, it still shows 2 red bars in the wireless display for my Spin3, but the setting is now 5G.  I believe this modification will be helpful.  However, the issue may be with wireless connectivity in this part of the house.  I have put in a wireless booster, a DECO TP-link with 3 portable access points, which should cover all areas of our home.  I connected one of the units directly to the ATT fiber Gig wireless router (in our basement) via ethernet cable.  I distributed the other two access points, putting one in my office near my laptop and printer.  I can see all the access points in the network status display on my Spin3, but the network setting is still 2 red bars in the ATT management status display. I will reset the router in a bit and see if this changes anything.  I connect regularly to Zoom meetings, as I am very active in Toastmasters. So I will see if your suggestion makes a difference and report back next week.  Thank you!

Looks like the wireless adapter setting reverted back to 2.4 even though I specifically set it to 5Ghz on the adapter on the Spin 3.  ???  (I am monitoring the wireless status on the ATT wireless router.)

Check Device Manager preferred band setting again to see if that changed back to 2.4GHz or none. It should not have changed unless your ATT mgt app or an errant update is changing it. BTW, do you have any 3rd party virus scanners running in the background?

checked device mgr again.  says 5G preferred in wireless adapter settings.  rebooted router; rebooted Spin3; shows 3 green bars @2.4G  in att status display.
We use malwarebytes for virus scan.  Yes, it is running in background

Since you’re using the TPlink wireless, I would recommend disabling the wireless radios on the ATT router because I think it’s confusing you.
    I'm not an Acer employee.

Thank you for the recommendation.  How would I disable the radio on the ATT router?  don't see Radio controls in the Smart Home Manager display from ATT

tried to post this answer to the discussion chain 3 times so you may see this post duplicated...  sorry...  dev mgr setting says 5g preferred when I look at it on the Spin3.  I rebooted the router; rebooted the Spin3, and now see the spin3 has 3 green bars at 2.4Ghz.  Green bars are good...  but would like to see 3 green bars at 5G.  We have malwarebytes running in the background.

  • Have you configured deco tp-link as a signal repeater? Can you send some screenshots of the ATT Gig router and deco tp-link settings tabs?

Good catch! When looking at stats on Deco TP-link, I found the devices were not setup as access points, which I preferred.  I changed the settings on the Deco system so that the 3 devices are now access points rebroadcasting the wireless signal.  So far today,  ATT status says Acer has 3 green bars at 2.4G.  Need to disable malwarebytes virus protection, reboot router and PC to see if I can get the Acer to 5G.

Is your ATT router a BGW320-505 ? If so, see here.

Are the router signal and signal repeater configured to get maximum power?
