Aspire one D250-1042 Restore Question

I took my granddaughter's laptop in to have it wiped and restored. The code on the tag on the bottom of the computer is illegible and there are no discs with the computer. The tech told me I would need the key to restore the system. The Acer web site tells me that I am no loger eligible for support. What next?

Jualez, your granddaughter is fortunate to have someone like you.

Are you saying that the current Windows system is still on the laptop? If so, the Windows key is encrypted in the registry. Different versions of Windows and different models of computers will allow different free programs to find it for you. You will have to do a Google search for the right program. A repair shop shouldn't charge too much to do it for you.

But if this is an older computer, why bother? Delete the programs you don't want. You have a five year old netbook with Windows XP that is adequate for surfing the web, word processing, and simple games. Forget hi-graphics games; this netbook couldn't play them when it was brand new.

I don't know your financial situation, but for less than $200 you can get her a tablet or even a low-end laptop that will be more powerful than this one.
