Aspire A515-44G-R83X won't power on

Turned laptop off normally.  Unit would not restart.  Unit is plugged in, blue led on and constant.  Attempted the battery reset w/ no change. Drained the battery completely, reset and plugged in w/ no change.  Removed the battery and discovered the led does not light when plugged in and the battery is removed but lights when the battery is reinstalled and battery is charging.  But still doesn't start.

How did you drain the battery if it wouldn't turn on?

  • Can you access the bios? Does the acer logo appear? Did you add any new devices before the problem occurred?

I repeatedly charged and ran down my old cell phone until the battery was drained.

Can't get to the BIOS because it won't run.
It makes no attempt to start beyond that the internal fan makes a jump when you depress the ON switch so No, never got to the LOGO screen.
No changes to the machine when last used and normal shutdown.

If you mean via USB port, this may have destroyed the battery pack since it likely went below the critical 5% charge level without warning in a power off state. A battery might but not always survive this once or twice, but if it happens often enough it can go into a high impedance state that may seem fully charged but can't deliver the charge fast enough (amperes) to power the mainboard. Most new mainboards won't power up without a functional battery installed. Replacement battery packs are less than about $50usd. Google search the a515-44G & battery for vendors who ship to your location.

I'd try connecting a display to the HDMI port and see if anything comes up. Laptop display may not be coming on.

This was the only time I've charged off the battery (and only after it wouldn't start normally)...it was a bit of a "Hail Mary" play to try and force the laptop into a 'normal' charging/running situation.  The "repeatedly" refers to it taking several times charging the phone to fully drain the laptop's battery once.

Shouldn't the blue LED come on if the unit is plugged in even w/o the presence of a battery?  I have used a friend's laptop w/ a completely shot battery that worked fine off the AC plug (though the battery was present in that machine, just not doing anything).  Power to the motherboard doesn't "need" to go through the battery or does it? (If all this machine needs is a replacement battery I'd be thrilled but since it lights up only w/ the battery I assumed the problem must be elsewhere.)

(I freely admit my experience working on computers has always been on desktops, my laptop hardware experience is limited to swapping batteries for people.)

Just discovered this which shows that a laptop will run w/ no battery present but w/ unit plugged in to the mains.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydPDowEk_bM

If the power LEDs light when there is a battery in the unit and the unit won't run what would cause the LEDs to not light when the battery is removed yet the laptop is plugged directly into the wall.    The unit won't run w/ battery but lights up.  The unit won't run w/o battery but doesn't light up.

What is the variable I'm missing here.

On newer laptops, no battery --- often no nothing. No power LED or maybe a blinking LED indicating a problem. Battery packs that've dropped below the critical level sometimes can't be revived. Due to the risk of overheating or fire, their own internal charge regulator essentially prevents further charging. Sorry.

I have access to an identical laptop so I was able to do some further data gathering.
In spite of it appearing to charge normally the original battery is indeed dead, when placed in the second machine that machine would not boot.  But apparently there is more wrong than just a battery.  Placing the battery from the second machine into the original yields the same results, nothing...no boot.
These models will run on direct AC w/o a battery.  With the battery removed from the second machine it would boot when plugged into the mains.  The blue LED does light up but only when the unit is booting and running, not when turned off as it would w/ a battery present in which case its purpose is apparently just displaying that the battery is fully charged.  The original unit does not boot or run when plugged in w/o a battery.

Thanks to Jack E for trying to help.  Seems my choices are pay Acer a whole lot of money to repair or pay Acer a bit more than that to acquire a new machine.

If it's no longer under warranty, it might be worth taking to a local laptop repair shop for an evaluation & repair estimate.

If have a DVM, check the unplugged power supply for 19-21vdc. By your language I suspect you are on 240vac ?

BTW I have run many laptops just on the charger and without the battery attached. Some are easier to remove than others.
