Windows 7 Upgrade on Acer 8730

Good afternoon folks!

I recently had to replace the drive on my Acer 8730-6918.  I upgraded to this drive from a 320GB drive.  Reinstalling Vista from the recovery disks was no problem.  When I bought the computer, the free Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade worked seamlessly.  However, I cannot get the upgrade to re-install since I replaced the drive.  It appears to go through all the motions until the very end, then I get a message “Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer’s hardware”

Has anyone seen this issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

Thank you.

I can only suggest to use the Upgrade Advisor when upgrading.

Make sure that Vista is completely up to date with all Windows Updates completed.  This may take some time, as Service Packs may have pre-requisite software that needs to be installed before the Service Pack.

There should be no difference in the OS, as you used the recovery media to restore the OS.

The Upgrade Advisor said all criteria were met.  I eventually found a solution on the microsoft KB.  Apparently new drives are configured differently.  Mine was set on AHCI.  When I changed that  to IDE, Windows 7 installed without a hitch.  Apparently, if you have Windows 7 with SP1, you won't see this problem.
