Intel HD graphics card outdated

I have an Acer Aspire 5745G with an Intel HD Graphics card.  The driver currently installed for the card is version 8.15.10.2119.  I am currently running Windows 7 64 bit (NOT Service Pack 1).

I am trying to get updated to Windows 7 Service Pack 1, but apparently the Windows Updater has a problem with some of the Intel drivers, of which mine is one.  So...

I downloaded the updated driver files from the Acer website.  But, when I try to update the driver, I get the message "An error occurred while registering one or more components.  Setup will exit.", and, just as it says, the setup exits without updating the driver.

Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get the Intel HD driver updated?

(Don't know if it's sighnificant, but there is another graphics card in the system, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M.  Both cards appear to be enabled, but, if I disable the Intel graphics card, I get a blank, black screen, so I'm not sure what the Nvidia card is doing.)
