Is there another SSD slot close by to the ram? Looking at the diagram it looks like that slot is noted as ssd2 which is flagged as sata only

yup you're totally right. but when i bought this notebook it said it came with a hybrid sata ssd and a free nvme slot, so i bought the nvme ssd.
i guess i should have double checked the facts.
can i replace my old ssd then? since it is occupying the oh so precious nvme slot.(i tried removing it's screws and it was just impossible lol, do i even have the right philips key? probably not.)

Your AN515-43 is only compatible with PCIe Gen.3x2 M.2 "B&M End Key" type drives and an M.2 "M End Key" NVMe PCIe 3 x4 is not compatible. These are the recommended sort of M.2 drives that Acer fits to the Nitro 5 AN515-43 - KINGSTON RBU-SNS8154P3/512GJ1 or the SANDISC N8SP2 SDAPNUW-512G-1014 that are all PCIe Gen.3x2  "B&M End Key" types, also these NVMe M.2 drives have different end keys. Best for you is to use the Crucial System Scanner that will give you all the suitable SSD drive upgrades for your laptop that Crucial makes and is compatible for your AN515-43.
