Hi

I'm having fun with my Iconia W3 connecting over WiFi to a WiFI enabled device - an Accellerometer + Magnetomiter from LevilIt works fine with multiple IPad, IPhone and Win8 Laptops all sat on my desk now! But when I try to connect with the Iconia it fails to connect?

Any ideas?

thanks

    Concerning the Levil:

Go to Control Panel>Network and....>network connections

    Select "Internal Wifi" &right click

    Select "Properties"

Select "Internet protocol v4" & click on "properties"

Change Obtain an IP.... to Set

    Put 169.254.1.8 in the address

Click on "subnet mask" and it should fill with 255.255.0.0

OK back out of control panel out

Go to wireless and select the Levil (WiFly-GSX-xx)

See if it will communicate (TCP 169.254.1.1 on TCP 2000)

ps will need to set back to "Obtain IP automagically" to connect to any other network.

pps it is probably one of the broadcom settings that is blocking it. Normally a PC defaults to 169.254.x.x when there is no connection.

Try moving closer or using a USB WiFi device. The W3 WiFi range seems to be remarkably short.

cheers!  they are sat next to each other on the table... how far is too far?

Think that is a new record for poor W3 WiFi preformance unless you have a very long table. Mine is OK to about 30 feet if pointed just right.

Oh dear... up to now I have no problems with WiFi on my W3.

The device is listed in the available WiFi networks and is shown as an ad hoc network. But it won't connect?

Its almost as if the process is checking for external connectivity on a network that does not have it...

    anyway, thanks

What is the device that does not connect please ? May be a setting there.

Hi, the device is a mini AHRS from Levil --> http://www.aviation.levil.com/

I do not think the problem is there as it connects fine with IPad(s) & Laptop running Windows 8. I think the issue is with the Broadcom 4330 as a quick search shows this is the NIC on the tablet and others have similar problems...

I have tried re-installing the driver and changing some settings but it hasn't helped....

    regards

Under the Broadcom adapter driver in Device Manager and on the Advanced tab the is a menu with a large number of parameters most of which I have not analyzed. I gained some bandwidth by turning WMM off. I wonder how many others can be disabled and if this is part of the problem (I have this day job...)

Yeah, started there...no luck so far. It's difficult to know what the settings do exactly!

Is your day job for Acer? I am a programmer and I need this to work!

Mostly deal with computer security for a large enterprise. Tablets and such are a stress reliever.

OK just disabled just about everything except N, main antenna, 20/40, and afterburn. Ran some distance tests

    2': 28 MB/s down

    10 ft: 22 MB/s

    33 ft 18.41 MB/s

Then I hooked the big monitor through the HDMI port to a VGA adaper

    6.88 MB/s

The I removed the adapter and used a direct HDMI cable to an Acer monitor.

    7.23 MB/s

    Disconnected the HDMI

    19.26 MB/s

So connecting to a big monitor through the HDMI port results in a 66% speed loss. WIFI is not the most sensitive I've seen but not that bad without.

    Any ideas ?

    I'm impressed!  Many thanks

Now that we know what the problem is try this:

    • Use Registry Editor to create the following registry key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
    • Add the following value to this key:
      Value name: IPAutoconfigurationEnabled
      Value type: REG_DWORD
Value in hexadecimal: 1 (A value of 1 enables APIPA support on this computer)
      reboot

I just tried on my W3 and an ipconfig/release now gives a wiredless IP of 169.254.178.235

    Hi Padgett

I am finding this solution to be a little flakey. I've tried the ipcongig /release but it doesnt want to connect to the Levil.  I am assuming on release it should allocate a new IP address in the 169.254.x.x range? It doesnt seem to do this on mine, I have added the registry setting you suggested.

    any thoughts?

ok... i think its just a bit flakey. I did a release followed by disable & enable the wifi NIC and its fine... I will either live with it of figure out how to do it programatically!

I don't know it just worked for mine. The W510 has no problem it is just the W3 that is non-compliant. I did not need to disable though, just ipconfig/release and mine automagically generated the 169.254.

There appears to be something really flakey about the Broadcom WiFi implimentation. APIPA has been a Microsoft standard since Windows 3.11 and the technet note was on how to disable, not enable.

BTW the 169.254.1.1 has been a router address since day 1 so is an address a PC will never select.

What is really strange is that it seems to be the same 4330 SDIO as the W510 and shares some of its quirks (attach a HDMI monitor and the Wifi speed heads south in proportion to the resolution) but this is something new.

I suspect that the W3 is something cobbled together, possibly at Microsoft's request, to prove something could be built to compete with the iPad mini, expect a 4Q intro of the real thinner/lighter/brighter probably a Bay Trail-T (Z3770) product with Win 8.1 and hope it is 1/2" narrower so it fits a jacket pocket. If really want to make a difference the <3w T should allow adding a real GPS, then it would be a real winner.

Oh and a dock that could be used in a car & connectors that all line up on the bottom (or a standard connector & outputs like the Malata DS A002) pretty please ?
