BIOS setting for RAID? - Nitro AN517-52

I have dual SSD Nitro AN517-52.  I bought it with the two drives and have put Linux on one drive.  I upgraded the BIOS from V1.03 to V2.06 and I am noticing slow booting to Linux.  I've asked for some help on a Linux forum and people have looked at the logs and see a timeout that might be related to the boot timing out looking for something that might be related to RAID.  They say I want to be running AHCI.  How to change this in the BIOS?

  • This modification can corrupt the operating system. On windows, you need to enable safe boot before changing the sata mode so that problems occur during boot. On linux, there must be a similar option.

Access the bios, go to the main tab, press ctrl+s and change the sata mode to ahci.

bon dia egydiocoelho, minha espousa e brasileira mas no falo portuguese.........  or certainly not much

I did a shut down to Linux Mint.  Started the laptop with the power switch, F2 to enter the BIOS. At some earlier point I did something where I have to enter a password to even get in the BIOS and fortunately have it well stored to not lose it.  I got into he BIOS but I can't make changes to any of the settings on the Information tab.  I left or right arrow to the other tabs and then I can up and down arrow on other tabs and make changes but I can not do that on the Information tab.  So I can not select Sata Mode and change it from Obtain with Raid to AHCI.

Is it possible I have something set in the BIOS that keeps me from doing this or is it set in Mint?  or Windows?   where in windows do I enable Safe Mode and if I make those changes in Windows that allows me to change to AHCI will that allow Linux to see the other SSD where it resides as AHCI?
  • Are you pressing CTRL+S?

Thanks.  It took using CTRL + S on the Main tab (hmmm I can't remember what I was doing before, that wasn't working; maybe doing it in the Information tab) to bring up the extra setting for SATA mode.   When I used Cntl + S that showed me the SATA mode and I then changed it to AHCI.

Linux Mint now is happy and boots without hanging for 1.5 minutes like it was doing when I had it set to Optain with RAID.

But Windows wont boot.  I get an error message.  On the linux forum I've been pointed to some instructions for what to do in Windows, prior to making the BIOS change.  Now that I know that I can make that change in the BIOS I might try that.  THX. .  Will report back at some point.

    I have it working.

I now have the BIOS set to AHCI and Mint boots without the 1.5 min timeout AND Win10 can also boot.

In the link provided above it showed how to disable Optain in Windows using the Intel Storage Technology app in Windows10.
    https://support.cyberpowerpc.com/hc/en- ... el-Optane-

But when I was in the app I saw this
Intel Rapid Storage - not enabledjpg
    Intel Rapic Storage system viewjpg
So I did nothing and proceeded on to the next link.

Right-click the Windows Start Menu. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
If you don’t see Command Prompt listed, it’s because you have already been updated to a later version of Windows. If so, use this method instead to get to the Command Prompt:
Click the Start Button and type cmd
Right-click the result and select Run as administrator
Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
If this command does not work for you, try bcdedit /set safeboot minimal
Restart the computer and enter BIOS Setup (the key to press varies between systems).
Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI from either IDE or RAID (again, the language varies).
Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
Right-click the Windows Start Menu once more. Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
If you had to try the alternate command above, you will likely need to do so here also: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot
Reboot once more and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled.

    That appears to have worked.

Both Mint and Win10 now load.

Hoping to learn how to get a boot loader working because I lost grub and have to use the BIOS to select boot order to switch back and forth between booting Win and Mint.
  • About safe boot, there is another way that is much easier and faster, see:

About grub, can you upload some pictures of the bios settings?
