    Hi @KingJ009,

Yes, you can upgrade your motherboard but it is not compulsory.

both the i3-9100 and the i5-9400 both use the same LGA 1151 socket.  you do not have to replace your motherboard, just be careful when inserting and removing the CPUs make sure the little triangle on the cpu lines up with the triangle on the motherboard to make sure you insert it properly without damaging anything

With your current mobo you can upgrade from your Socket 1151 OEM i3-9100 to either the Socket 1151 i5-7400 or even the highest spec Socket 1151 i7-9700 as the 65W TPD is the same on all these CPU's and it will be appropriate but, I would increase the cooling of the i7-9700 CPU to a better and either a dry cooling fan type cooler or put water cooling like a Corsair Hydro Series H60 V2 120mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler as the i7 will give you the best performance coupled with a high end GPU, that is what I would do but its up to you andyour budget?
