I think I posted this in the wrong place so
Iam having trouble with crackling in my laptop speakers. I am convinced now that this is a hardware problem. Someone did say try upgrade the bios but i am unsure.
I'm not sure how to fix it but we have tried a few things someone suggested this. I have ruled out this is a software issue But my question is as I am not certain

Is there something external that could have caused this, such as 'static' or a 'power surge' in the connections?

I don't think so that it is a hardware issue.    Before doing diagnosis we cannot come to any conclusion that it is a hardware issue.

First of all we need to determine whether it is a hardware or software issue.    Let us do the basic steps first...

    Try windows x
Go to device manager - Go to sound video and game controllers.  Expand it
Uninstall the sound driver from device manager.  Please uninstall all the items below the sound video and game controllers. Restart the computer.  It should work fine..

If it is still not working
Uninstall the sound driver from device manager
    Dont restart the computer.
    Go to support.acer.com
    chose your country
type snid or chose your model
    go to drivers
    Install the sound driver

    It should work fine.

Try to use external speakers or headset and check it.

It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. Here are some solutions that you can try out. Hope this works out fine for you. Sound crackling and popping problems can be caused by faulty audio device settings, outdated sound drivers or interference from certain hardware. That is to say, there is not a definite fix, but some general ones.  Read on and follow the easy-doing steps with images to find the right fit for you.
    1. Change Sound Format
    2. Update Audio Driver
    3. Disable Sound Enhancement
    4. Change Power Settings

    The system is AN517-51-77
This is definately a hardware issue. I just wanted to know what external issues could have caused this such as 'static' or a 'powersurge'
that could damage the system in this way.
