My acer came with 4GB Ram its a little over 2 years old; Core I5b  with a 500GB HD.

I added a complementary 2 GB ram DDR3 to the empty RAM slot.

Weird weird, the machine did not recognize the additional 2GB; so I switched the RAM around placing the 2GB to where the 4GB but still no change it reads 2GB rather than 4GB; my preplexion than transports me to think that both DDR's need to be of the same amount I ask "would this be a true assertment; or not?  does any1 know?? I tried the chat support, but I seem to not be on their fly list, maybe cause Acer is assuming im in the market for another Acer

    Hello

Did you check out if the RAM on your specific unit was upgradable? and if so that what total capacity.

    Good day.

I am having the same problem with upgrading RAM on my Acer Aspire X3400.  I am running Windows 7 (64 Bit) - Home Professional which is compatible up to 16GB RAM.  My system came with factory installed 4 GB (8 GB Capacity)  It has four memory slots with 2 GB RAM in two slots.  I purchased compatible RAM - received one 4 GB memory stick.  Same situation as yours..... Did you ever get this resolved?  I have searched high and low on the internet and haven't found a Forum yet that can answer my question!   ARRRGH!!!!!!
