Nothing burned out but it's caused a little spark. is my laptop motherboard dead?

    Yes, it would be much easier if we knew what model laptop you have. That looks like power circuitry in the circled area of the motherboard. I gather you hadn't disconnected the battery when you first opened it? :(

    Yes, those look like the power control circuits. If the battery wasn't disconnected while working on that area it could have easily shorted. Unfortunately there is no easy fix, likely the motherboard will need to be replaced. :(
