I think this is big problem for users who has updated OS to Win 8. I spent a lot of time to fix this problem. The Switchable graphics driver is not the only problem which you will find after the update to Win8. You may have problems also with the ethernet drivers which looks OK in the device manager but during the network traffic you will get very low speed arount 1 Mbps. Here is my order to fix the probles.
Network Problems
LAN
Qaulcom Atheros AR8151 Gigabit ethernet controller - update the default driver version installed by win8 to newer version 2.1.0.13. This version is downloadable from the Atheros website or do some googling.
Wifi
Broadcom 802.11n network adapter - update the default driver version installed by win8 to newer version 5.100.235.19. Or you can use original Acer drivers from Acers website version 5.60.350.6. This drivers works with Win7 and Win 8 also.
AMD graphics problems
OK now let fix the Graphics problems. What you need is to download drivers from AMD website. You will need two drivers.
1st New drivers for AMD Radeon HD 5650
2nd Legacy drivers for AMD Radeon HD 4250
Why you need two drivers. From 2012 AMD support Radeon 5000 series and above separately from Radeon 4000, 3000, 2000 series. I donwnloaded driver 13.1 for Radeon 5000 and driver 13.1 legacy for Radeon 4000.
After the you download the drivers unpack them to diffenert folders. For exmaple AMD-Radeon5650-13.1, AMD-Radeon4250-13.1-Legacy. You can unpack the drivers by opening the installers .exe file. First the installer just unpack the driver files then start the installation. In this step you can cancel the installation. This is the way how to unpack the drivers. The installer unpack the drivers default to folder C:\AMD\. Copy the unpacked files to the created folder AMD-Radeon5650-13.1. Unpack the second legacy driver same way and copy the unpacked files to the created folder AMD-Radeon4250-13.1-Legacy.
! Important !
Step 1: Install the Radeon 5000 series drivers. Do not install it with express option. At the begining of drivers installation choose Custom Installation. You can install all the componetnt except AMD Vision Control Center. So never install AMD Vision Control Center, because this is the new version which not support older legacy 4000 series cards. If you install it, you will not find the Ati Power-Xpress switch options if you install it.
Step 2: Restart the computer
Step 3: Install the radeon 4000 series Legacy drivers. Install all the components AMD Vision Control center Included. This version of Control center is what we need.
Step 4: Restart the computer
Step 5: You may get warnings or error on display adapter if you check the Device Manager. Click on device and choose update driver - > Choose Browse my computer for this driver software -> choose the folder where you unpacked the the driver files. Do this step for the Second graphic card. And restart the PC.
Thats all. Everything will work fine.

Hi,
your answer was not what I asked for, I asked for an updated driver if that was availabe. new question, do you think this driver will be released?
After buying Win 8 from Microsoft i checked Acer homepage, and could not find my PC on the list, so that was no news to me, and your answer is irrellevant. I guess copy paste?

I see that is not what you asked for. You asked for a driver for an operating system that we do not support.
My answer makes it clear:
We do not support the operating system that you have installed.
We do not have driver support for said operating system on your unit.
Best of luck finding an appropriate driver.

Hi Thomas,
Interesting fix you gave for Acer5553G!
I am new to this forum and am about to install Win8 on my Acer Aspire 5553G.
I read your fix wich is hopefull for me to start the update.
2 questions about preparations before upgrading:
1Do I have to use the Acer Win8 Update tool (that also does a BIOS check and update) or can I just run my Win8 install CD?
2 When Win8 is installed and working according to your fix, can updates be installed from Microsoft, or will they be cause of future problems?
any other hints or issues known that may help me ?
thanx
