So i have a 2018 nitro 5 an515-42 with a AMD ryzen 5 2500u, with 12 gig ram for now.  But i'm wondering if the laptop would be compatible with a newer AMD ryzen 7, with having  to change the motherboard, power supply, or other mods?  Also, if this could work, would it cause any heat or power problems?

It's not possible to I'm afraid , the CPU is soldered into the socket.

Its a definite "NO" as you cant change the CPU ONLY per say on your AN515-42's motherboard but, you can change your OEM AMD R18M-G1-90 4GGDDR5 (256*32*4) LF R5-2500U 25WNB.Q3R11.001 motherboard to the higher spec "Mainboard Freed RRS AMD R18M-G1-90 4GGDDR5
(256*32*4) LF R7-2700U 25W - Acer part#: NB.Q3R11.002" that has the Ryzen 7 2700U, that is your only option for an upgrade in that part of your laptop and of course to the max total of 32GB RAM into the AN515-42's 2x slots at 16GB DDR4-2400MHz 260-pin SO-DIMM per slot, I don't know how you have 12GB??? As the recommended memory modules per slot should be with the same modules like e.g. 8GB + 8GB =16GB of the ma eDDR4-2400MHz modules to give you 16GB right up to 2x 16GB DDR4-2400MHz to give your 32GB.

Also and with changing the mobo, these are the two types of mobos fitted OEM to your AN515-42 with AMD CPU's that are soldered onto them and can't be changed:

Ok thanks, for the info, that sucks i would have to get a whole mother board, seems like more work then it's worth, but idk. Also the reason why i have 12 gigs, is the laptop came with 8, but i put in a small stick of 4 from my old laptop,  lol. i want to upgrade ram in the future, but 12 does good for now for what i need to do, even though the 4 gig stick is older, it holds up, and can play gta 5 and rdr2 no prob with 12 gb.

    Hi RUSH212,

I think It's not possible. Current devices have processors integrated (soldered) directly on the motherboard, not possible to change or upgrade

As for the RAM, I think he added 8GB to the factory default of 4GB. I should be okay provided that the frequency is the same, i.e. 2400Mhz, otherwise the system will utilize the slower one.

Doa Crucial System Scan as that will tell you exactly the max capacity and suitable ram for your laptop.
