I just downloaded the file and extracted the contents without issue.

The USB driver is a 44.1 MB ZIP file.  Please be sure that the download completed successfully.

If the file did not complete successfully, you would get the same message that you gave above:

"The archive is either in an unknown format or damaged."

There is only a single directory with 4 files in it for this driver.

I have deleted the original download to check that it downloaded properly. I get a rar file saying download complete I click close, go to destination click to unzip and the same thing as above happens again i get the error message with a folder to the side of the rar file but it is empty.

It is a ZIP file, not a RAR file.  I'm wondering if you are having an issue with whatever application is opening the file.

Can you open the ZIP file with Windows Explorer?

BTW it would be nice if the driver/BIOS packages included a "contents" document. It is interesting that the W3 and W510 share a common architecture yet the W3 "other" is half the size of the W510 (21.2 MB vs 41.6 MB)

I  wonder if the W510 package also includes the Acer apps.

    No. Only drivers.

Nota: zip files of Bios are exactly the same as Drivers.

To open a ZIP file with Windows Explorer:

    1. Go to the location where you downloaded the file.
    2. Right click the file and choose Open with...
    3. Choose Windows Explorer from the listed programs

    Delete the file you downloaded.

Attempt to download the file into a different location.

I've now downloaded the file several times and checked extraction.

Once the files are extracted, double click on setup.exe to install the USB Driver.

That's all you need to do.  After that, attaching the B1-A71 to the computer via USB cable should see the B1-A71 and correctly identify it.

Thanks very much got a slight hitch, got a pop up saying to plug in the device which was plugged in clicked ok then got another at the end saying "the wizard was interupted before acer b1-a71 could be completely installed. The system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the installation again. I just clicked finish went to my computer and it was showing up ok so thanks again for your help, much appreciated.
