How's the performance of your acer nitro 5 AN517-52?

Hi again.

So, nearly one month ago, I've acquired an acer nitro 5, model AN517-52 with these specs:

  • CPU: intel i7 10750h
  • GPU: geforce RTX 3060
  • RAM: 8 gb DDR4 (2600 MHz)
  • Storage: 256 SSD
  • Screen: 17.3" 120hz

i got it on curry's pc world and their page they basically say a bunch of things about how powerful the machine. Capable of running some of the latest triple A games such as, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty Warzone, etc... but the thing is, they don't really specify important things like, what graphics settings are they using? Were these tests results achieved when the pc was plugged in or out? How consistent is the performance?

I didn't thought about none of that when I looking to buy this machine and as it turns out, I was scammed. This machine is not that capable really, considering the how expensive it is. When using it when it's not plugged in the performance is straight up horrible, this thing cannot handle any modern game with consistent fps, its always jumping around 60 to 30 fps sometimes dipping below that even. And if your wondering what games I tried out to get these results, those were: ARMA 3, Verdun, Rising storm 2 Vietnam, Fallout 4, Enlisted and Quake 2 RTX, I played all of these with the graphics maxed out. Even when the computer is plugged in, the performance is still inconsistent albeit it is significantly higher, for example: in ARMA 3 I get 15/30 fps when it's not plugged in but when I do plug it in, I get around 80/110 fps which much better but somewhat inconsistent.

In fact, the performance of this computer is so underwhelming that I think this machine might be faulty but nobody was able to tell me if it is or not, I can only assume stuff and with that being said this brings to the reason why I'm writing this post in the first place, that is to know about the experience of other individuals who own this exact machine or something else with very similar specs. As anybody's machine been performing as bad as mine? And if not, what did you do to get it working properly? Let me know please.

"Epikaffe" that is very unfortunate that you are getting those anomalies in performance especially with such a great and expensive laptop like the AN517-52 as the Intel i7 10750H and the new RTX 3060 series GPU should be able to easily handle these games and play them fluently. Download and install and use NVIDIA's for the RTX cards setting software called the NVIDIA RTX EXPERIENCE version Version 1.3.0.5 this software is like their old NVIDIA GeForce Experience which is and as NVIDIA describes: "Staying productive while juggling multiple projects, collaborating with remote teams, and meeting tight deadlines is a challenge. Get the productivity tools you need to work faster and smarter with NVIDIA® RTX Experience™ for enterprise. Featuring built-in desktop recording capabilities up to 8K, alerts for the latest driver updates, game and application optimizations, and access to desktop management tools, it's the ultimate companion to your NVIDIA RTX or NVIDIA Quadro graphics card"

Also, I would recommend that you increase the RAM to at least 2x 8GB for a total of 16GB or even to the total and max capacity for the AN517-52 of 32GB with 2x 16GB of either DDR4-2666MHz or DDR4-3200MHz type memory to give you full potential for gaming as having only 8GB of RAM is very low today! Also run the last BIOS for this laptop and make sure Win-10 is up to date also, as all these factors contribute to a well running system!

Try to install the software and hardware I've suggested above and use the NVIDIA settings for these same games and whatever other demanding software that you will use this laptop for? But, always remember that laptops are not as good as desktops for high end gaming, fps's etc as gaming and high end applications are always affected/restricted by heat and high demanding power to give you their full performance, this can't be improved unless you curb the heat and increase power demands in a laptop as your demands are increase during high end gaming, but especially if you intend using this as a hard core gaming laptop? Hence, you have to do the above and/or you mod this laptop, which I don't recommend that you do! IMO, don't touch this laptop as its new and under warranty, send it back to Acer and let Acer diagnose the problems that you wrote above, this is irrespective if other people have or have not these and your problems. As the AN517-52 should perform to its hardware specs potential and what Acer claim, btw I've got a similar high end 17" platform laptop and it performs exceptionally well for gaming but, you always have to have the laptop on mains power and you have to keep it cool otherwise, you will never ever get near whatever the gaming figures are for your laptop, its a simple formula.

    Greetings StevenGen.

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking your time to respond to my post. It is much appreciated.

Secondly, I followed your suggestion to install the NVIDA RTX EXPERIENCE but I stubbled upon a problem, when trying to get the software installed it says: "NVIDIA RTX Experience requires an NVIDIA Quadro, Tesla or NVS GPU with a driver installed."

Also, I'm aware that 8GB of Ram is quite low nowadays but none of the games that I tried out ask for anything more than 8GB. For example with a game like ARMA 3, which is almost a decade old game, it says that it requires at least 4GB of ram to be able to run it, for the highest settings, it says that it needs maximum of 8GB and still my machine struggles a bit to run it smoothly.

I am also aware that this machine isn't necessarily a super high end computer but at least it should be capable of having a smooth and stable performance, right? I tried to get in touch with acer support and they simply told me to check for updates, to which I responded saying that everything was in order and since then I haven't heard anything else from them. I also went to a local curry pc world store asking for support to which they replied me with, "Call our support number and they'll sort you out". So I did that and basically the guy that I was speaking with told me , "If you're unsatisfied with your product just get a refund or swap it for a different product." So much for support, isn't it ?

I also forgot to mention, I tested at least two benchmarks, those being  "UserBenchmark" and "Novabench". Both of them gave my CPU a very low score, at least while the machine wasn't plugged in.

Here the screenshoots of the tests:

    UserBenchmark:

    1.

    2.

    3.

    4.

    5.

    Novabench:

    1.

    2.

    3.

    • Next follows screenshots of the benchmark results when the computer was plugged in:

    UserBenchmark 2:

    UB1:

    UB2:

    UB3:

    Novabench 2:

    NB1:

    NB2:

    NB3:

Could these results indicate a potential problem with the CPU or any other components? If yes could you be able to point me towards the solution to get these issues resolved?

And again, I thank you for responding to my post and I hope we'll get in touch soon.

There are no benchmark results of your dedicated GPU, maybe you are running games on Intel, the integrated one. It might be caused by bad drivers, if rtx 3060 doesnt even show up in task/device manager. Also make sure laptop switches to dedicated GPU when gaming. Next may sound silly, but check your laptop power plan, it could be set to eco mode. Still, there is no excuse for this i7 not to work as expected.

Im not an expert in this field, my advice is: if you cant make this machine perform, i recommend getting a refund, if you can.
