Why does my Acer Spin 5 SP513-52N-58E1 not work without the battery plugged in?

So my Acer laptop has been a bit weird recently. About a year ago the peformance dramatically dropped and only just went back to normal a few weeks ago. But when the performance went up, the laptop would turn off if it isn't plugged in and did weird stuff like the 255% available thing. I've troubleshooted for hours and found nothing that has worked so far. Does anyone know what's happening?

  • what is the exact model? example sf315-52-58vh. have you checked battery wear with the hwinfo64 program?

    Hi BlueberryPie,

    # Try to update the battery driver

    1. Hold windows key and hit letter X.
    2. Choose the device manager option.
    3. Go with the option battery.
    4. Under the title battery.

    5. Right click on that option ----> Update all driver under the title battery.
    6. Choose "search automatically". 

    Check this T/S and post the result. ​

    The model for my acer laptop is SP513-52N-58E1, and I have already tried to update the battery driver.
  • First, try uninstalling the battery and ac adapter drivers from the device manager. Then restart windows and check if the problem still occurs.

    acer also released a bios version that updates the keyboard battery controller:

    Hi BlueberryPie,

    Try to do power drain,

    1. Turn OFF the unit.
    2. Unplug the charger. 
    3. At the bottom there will be a tiny pin hole with battery sign close to it take a pin or paper clip and insert into it hold that button for 20-30 seconds. Then turn ON the unit and check.

    i tried those and it didn't work. My laptop frequently experiences 255% available when plugged in, it goes from 100% to 0% in a matter of minutes (plugged in) while im gaming, and sometimes it comes up with a file explorer tab showing "your battery is very low".

    I haven't used the hwinfo64 program and have generated a battery report via command prompt.

    I will probably contact acer or my local laptop retailer.

    Often Windows can get corrupted data as to battery life, especially when the battery itself is confused. Do the full battery reset process (Easwar's suggestion, plus a 15-30 minute wait after the reset press, then plug in and wait for full battery indication before turning it on). Once that is complete the battery itself will have default values in it's internal tables. Then do a Windows recalibration. Fire up the laptop and disconnect the charger. Allow it to run on battery until it shuts down due to low battery level (typically at 3-10%, depending on your settings). Plug the charger back in and wait for a full battery indication before turning it on. Two or three cycles through that usually gets the battery percentage to show correctly and you can redo the battery report.

    Thanks for the comment billsey. I'm trying it right now and going to repeat the cycle a couple times.

    I'm not 100% sure but I think that it turned off at around 20-30%. Is that normal?

    Now this is happening and my laptop wont charge at all. The orange light occasionally flashes orange and when I turn it off there is no orange light with the ac adapter plugged in.


  • Doing some calculations, it looks like your battery has lost 50% of its capacity. Is your laptop still under warranty? What is the bios version? I ask this, because KBC is referring to the battery controller, see:

    I understand that my laptop has lost 50% of its capacity, but i don't understand why my laptop is like this. My laptop's warranty has expired now, I think the BIOS is up to date. Here is a photo below.

    I'm trying to update the bios but this happened. I cannot charge my laptop as it is stuck on 1%.


  • Your laptop already has the latest bios version. In that case, I suggest you change the laptop battery.

    Yes, everything is looking like the battery has failed. The Acer part number for the battery is: KT.00305.007.
