My Nitro 5 AN515-45 doesn't display to my external monitor at over 100Hz

Ok, so as the question states, i can't get anything over 100Hz on my external monitor, that is 144Hz. I have the option to change the refresh rate to 120 or 144Hz, but with ANY resolution it just shuts off and says "no signal". The monitor is AOC Agon AG271QX, it has HDMI 2.0 and works fine at 144Hz with the same cable on my Aspire desktop. My laptop is the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 with R7 5800H and RTX 3070. Could there be some kind of incompatibility between HDMI 2.1 and HDMI 2.0? Or is my laptop broken straight out of the box?

    Hi @EI0809

To get the higher refresh rates I would recommend you to check it with a Display Port cabel instead of a HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1.

Because for higher refresh rates it is mandatory that we connect it with a Display Port cabel.

Hope it will help you in some way.

The laptop doesn't have any kind of displayport-port, and as stated in my initial question, the same cable and monitor port work happily at 1440p 144hz on my Aspire desktop. I've been looking into hdmi-dp adapters, but all i'm finding is dp-hdmi (dp on pc end and hdmi on monitor end)

    Hi EI0809,

    Check with the VGA cable.

I don't have any adapters and isn't vga suckier than hdmi? I do get a display at any resolution at the max of 100hz, so the problem really isn't that big, but it would be nice to get the full 1440p 144hz out of the monitor on a more powerful pc.

The 3070 should be more than capable of running the display at 144hz 🤔 whats the cable you are using for it? You dont need a silly "supa gold plated" one which many stores will try to sell, but it will need to be branded as "Premium High Speed HDMI" or "Ultra high speed HDMI" (God i hate branding) for it to work. The former is HDMI 2.0 the latter 2.1

The one i have is branded as "High Speed HDMI with ethernet", it is the one that came with the monitor iirc, but the weird thing is, that the same cable works fine on my desktop aspire. I need to try to get maybe a 2.1 cable which will take some time, since i don't have any electronics stores that near me, so i'll be back with the answer later.

Ok, i got a cable (a really cheap one because that's all i could get) that's advertised as being able to get speeds up to 48 Gbit/s, and up to 8k@60Hz or 4k@120Hz and dynamic HDR, but i still can't get above 100Hz on the monitor, still the same problem; when i choose either 120Hz or 144Hz the monitor just says "No signal". So i guess i have to stick with 1440p@100Hz

That propably means the HDMI 1.4 port, since the monitor has also a 2.0 port, and it works at 1440p@144Hz on my desktop with HDMI. And i have the option to put it to 144Hz, i tried changing the port in the osd to 1.4 and i could only put the monitor to the maximum of 75Hz as HDMI 1.4@1440p is supposed to.
  • The an515-45 model has a 2.1 hdmi port:

Does the same problem occur when buying an HDMI 2.1 cable? Also, it seems that this restriction may be related to the version of the nvidia graphics card:

I dont get it ,  the port should be more than enough to run at well about 100hz, if you download a EDID detector, does it identify the port OK? It ckuld be a fault on the GPU but that would be odd, also may be worth re installing the drivers to see if it gives it a kick. The HDMI should be directly connected to the nvidia GPU as well
