I purchased my new Aspire 7 (A715-75G) two weeks ago at the local retailer and unboxed it yesterday. Everything goes well except for the battery-life. It seems that something is not okay with the performance of the battery.

Almost fully charged, the battery lasts almost 4 hours and not more. Is there any method to extend the capacity or other points of the battery to get the proposed 8.5 hours approx to use the Laptop?

 Cheers!

    Health looks ok so it could be apps, anything showing as above medium power consumption in task manager, and any AV installed? AV is usually the culp

    @Leostat thanks for your answer. I am afraid, but i havent used the laptop productively since yesterday.
    As i have noticed, that the battery gets drained and i saw that acer installs much bloatware on the system, i installed a fresh installation of Windows 10 Pro.

    I noticed in the battery-overview from Windows that the almos 24% gets used by Firefox (before it was Edge) allthough it isnt running.

    And i havent installed any AV yet. And never will ;-)
  • a) decrease the brightness of the display;
    b) put the power plan in ENERGY SAVE mode;
    c) activate the economy forever:

    d) activate airplane mode;

    @egydiocoelho that would be an option but i think if the device is new and everything up to date that shouldnt be the first step i should do.

    In addition to this, when running on Battery-Saving-Mode, Windows shows, that the laptop needs to be powered up again in 2 hours. Without Power saving mode in 3 hours...

    I am going to try out to recalibrate the battery. Maybe this helps

    Yeh agreee that it shouldnt be that bad already. The "time" numbers are always massaged and are generally taken at half brightness with a light load on the system but less than half of it seems odd, if you open a cmd window as admin and run:
    1. powercfg /energy /duration 3600

    It will generate a HTML report of whats sucking your battery, this will take a hour to run :) if you dont want to wait the number is just the seconds. It could be firefox in the background and this would confirm it! the report has a number of sections.

    The top bit is just random info about it, next is errors. These are applications which either have forced the power state higher, stopped it from dropping power state, or things which use power. For example mine has:
    CPU Utilization:Processor utilization is high
    USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Selective Suspend
    System Availability Requests:Display Required Request

    If non of these stand out as odd, the next section delves into what processes are using power by keeping the processor in use. Most likley the culprit of the power hog will be in here.

    do not belive the lie of battery lifetine, divide the time given by manufacturer by at leas 2  just like electric cars. trust me and you wont get disappointed. so, if you want 5 hours of battery, look for some 10 hours of specifications. good luck with this.

    @rich1974 yes i know. But i have bought the PC as a daily driver. And if the device have such good specs for my work as developer it is nearly impossible to use it just for 2 Hours... I mean, this would not work in a train or something like this :-)

    @Leostat i've ran the command now for an half hour. There was an error about a missing base device driver. The problem is, that the output is in German, but there is a missing driver where the information shows that this could consume much power:

    Do you know how i can get the Basesystemdriver? Searched in the net but there are too many pages which want to give drivers... and malware.

    Cheers and thanks for you help!

    @Leostat short Update:

    I installed the Chipdrive-Driver now and got my 10 Hours of Battery Live ;-).

    Ill check if the battery lives longer now and will give you a feedback later. Thanks for your awesome help!

    If you head to here : https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/support

    Enter your SNID for the offcial malware free drivers :D , at a guess base system driver may be the serial IO, chipset, Storage or IRST . But this is quite the guess im afraid!

    Edit : You beat me to it! Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa its now reporting 10 hours after the chipset install? 🤞 Let us know how it goes over the next few days please as this could be super useful if we see the same problem in the future :D

    @Leostat ill do so. But is this a common issue that the laptop consumes more energy when a driver is missing? How could that even be possible?

    Allthough i am a Software-Engineer and also had some lessons about drivers and more, i cant understand how a PC just can 'throw away the power'? :scream:

    Cheers!

    So the chipset driver is responsible for controlling where the power goes and how fast the components are running at, it could be that without the chipset driver, things were just sipping the max amount of energy and not clocking down. For the processor alone, you can be looking at 1.45v under load but clocking down to 0.6v idle, so close to a 3X power save. It would be similar across the board with storage and the GPU's 🤷‍♀️

    Most computer things can never be truly "idle" though, they just say "noop" (no operation) over and over again until there is something to do. More power to them means they can sit there saying I've got nothing to do more and more. A side effect of this then is components generate more heat, which needs more power to be pumped into the bits, and more power diverted to the cooling.

    I've learned not to question it 😂 the more you try and understand, the more it seems to be impossible to understand; I'm more of a IT security / IT generalist person, so can't claim to know how it works, just know the odd fix here and there!

    But isn't that chipset driver installed by windows update?

    @rich1974 i think it should but it wasn't.

    At the first Startup using the OEM-Windows (with Bloatware) the Driver were also not installed (shown in the Device-Manager). It might be more an issue from Windows and not from the Hardware something else.

    Used the PC today for a short while. Used around 9 Percent for one Hour. This is ok. But the "needs to be charged in x hours and y minutes" information is not really accurate. Sometimes it shows 3 hours, and sometimes 7 hours...

    The estimated charge time can take a while to kick in, its based off previous use / an esitmate of how much you are using now so it may take a few days for it to be a true estimate. It sounds like the chipset may have fixed it then woohoo!

    As for why update didnt pick it up, not all drivers are on windows update, whemn you search for em you only get really ofld ones for some reason https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=DEV_1911
  • you need to optimize your battery usage. Put the power plan in the economy mode, activate the battery saving, decrease the brightness of the display and activate the airplane mode.
