New Aspire XC-895 now has a working WD 240GB M.2 drive the OS can see but how do I make it the boot?

Hi

We got the Acer Aspire XC-895 last week. Today I added a second stick of RAM to take it to 16GB on board and I added a WD M.2 drive to the slot on the motherboard.

Everything is working. I've already cloned the C: drive to the SSD in anticipation of making this the primary boot drive to improve overall OS performance.

The problem... I cannot see an option in the BIOS to allow me to make the M.2 the primary boot drive?

Is this something to do with UEFI? Scratching my head as to what to do.

Thanks for any suggestions...
Ralph

    Hi,
You could try removing the old HDD and leave only the SSD to boot.

Good suggestion but I need the other hard drive for data storage... but it would be a good way to check I suppose?

Just not a long-term solution. Definitely want to use the new 1TB drive as a secondary to the SSD as boot and OS.

Yes, for testing purpose try removing the HDD, once you are happy with the cloning, you can format 1TB HDD and use it as a storage drive.

You mean keep it in the chassis and plugged in but format it as a secondary drive? Problem is, I don't know how I can do that? Surely in the BIOS I need ot specify the launch order to make the SSD I cloned from the HDD the boot drive... I just cannot see that option right now? It says "Windows Boot" but no reference to any specific HDD or SSD ... though it can see both in file manager once booted (off the HDD).

I wonder if there's a boot order configured by jumpers or something physical on the motherboard?

Once it has booted on the SSD the SSD will be the default, since it defaults to last booted. Then you can reconnect the HDD and have access through Disk Management to removing all the existing partition and creating a new full sized partition for your data. You just have to get that first SSD boot in and disconnecting the HDD is the easiest way to accomplish that.
