I used to have an Acer smartphone. It's battery multiple times overheated, almost burning down my apartment. It crashed always the most important times. Got rid of it long ago. I swore that I won't buy Acer ever again.

But this A515-44 was so cheap, almost too good to be true. Ryzen 4700u, the new hotness? Wow. 16 GB RAM? Wow. 512 GB SSD? Wow. Price under $750, including taxes? Wowowowow.

1. Wifi randomly disconnects, can't connect again until restart.
2. Can't put to sleep if HDMI is connected - cpu fan spins 100% forever.
3. 2 USB  out of 3 dies randomly on the fly until reboot.
4. GPU locks up until reboot if CPU runs at a high percentage for more than 3 minutes (try compiling anything meaningful... good luck)

Sure, I guess I got what I paid for. But this is just the worst garbage I ever used. I didn't expect a wonderbox for this amount, but I did expect a working configuration with crappy build qualitty. I got a crappy configuration with crappy build quality.

This is the worst garbage I ever bought. I really hoped for patches, or something. But this is not going anywhere since I bought it last September. I know I said that earlier, but this time I mean it. Never buying anything from Acer. Screw you Acer.

Consider upgrading your BIOS. Latest for your model is v1.12

I have already v1.12, the latest and "greatest" BIOS version.
The only noticeable thing BIOS update does is delete GRUB settings and reset most of the BIOS settings.

This post is just a reminder for me to never buy anything from this garbage brand - and a warning for others.
I have been looking for solutions and suffering from this piece of ***** machine in the past 7 months. I hoped to get out 3-5 years of this machine when I bought it, but I can't take it anymore. I will just get something else, and smash this pile of junk into pieces.

Don't buy anything from Acer, or you are on your own with whatever junk you buy.

I use both Windows and Linux. All problems are present under both operating systems, hence my suffering and hatred - it is not software issue.

Sounds like you have overheating problem. Note that NVMe SSD heats a LOT under heavy load (since you mentioned GPU and compiling, are you using Android Studio? That tool is a beast really), so you should offload part of your SSD activity to an external drive. I bought a USB 3.1 external SSD and the internal SSD is mostly for Windows use now, adverse effects of overheating almost vanished (random USB disconnects, screen flickering, overall system throttling and eventually lock-up/BSOD, etc)
Just try to find ways to prevent overheating, buy a cooling pad for example, I still think that's a very good purchase particularly if it has IPS panel.

Almost - I'm into LineageOS hacking. That was one of the main reasons for this CPU: high multicore performance, just what I needed. But having high performing hardware while making them unusable is just... makes me want to cry. But this is only one of my issues (though the biggest one).

The surprise network disconnections make me want to pull out my hair. I'm quite sure that I will just smash this pile of junk into pieces at one of these times.
And the inability to put the machine to sleep with external monitor is just ridiculous.

Thanks for trying to help with advices, but I just wanted to vent somewhere. I never had such a bad device as this one. It looks really great on paper, but in practice only blood, sweat and tears. And I'm pretty much done with it.
