Another Newbie - Nvidia Defect

Hi all,

just joined to find out what I can do, as my Laptop Acer Aspire 7520 has the Nvidia Defect.

Nvidia Defect ~ it first started a few years back when Nvidia changed the type of solder they use, (they started using a lead free type). But it has since been found that the solder they use cannot take the stresses of the heat generated by the graphics chips over a period of time.

I should add that when I contacted Acer Support I was ridiculed and basically told to have it repaired elsewhere, as there was no such problem!

If you are convinced you have a poor solder joint, you either need to find a repairer that does reflow work or you do it yourself. It may be possible to effect a repair without removing the chip but if you don't have the right equipment you could easily do more harm than good. If the chip requires removal and reballing and you don't have equipment then I would not attempt it. The costs would be too high. I buy solder paste from ebay and even then it costs an arm and a leg (plus all the other stuff you will need)! Take it to a good repairer.
