Aspire 7560 hard drive/no boot, *clicking* sound after 40 sec acer screen hang

I have an Acer Aspire 7560-P7YE5 with a WD50000BPVT-22HXZT3 hard drive.  Sometime yesterday the computer began to hang at the Acer login screen for exactly 40 seconds before an audible clicking is made and it moves on in the boot order.

It happened that the drive in another laptop was exactly the same make, model, size, etc…  But, when I replace the first drive with it, the laptop does not even hang at the Acer screen, it simply moves down the boot list.  If I place both drives in the machine in either order, the machine hangs trying to load from the one and skips the other just as it would separately.  I also tried a completely different SATA desktop drive and it reacted the same way it did to the other laptops hard drive, going right to optical/network.

If I book from an OS install disk there is no HD recognized.

However, BIOS recognizes any drives connected correctly.

Any help is appreciated, thanks much.
