Acer Revo RL80 - buttons not working on remote control

Hopefully someone can help me as I'm tearing my hair out trying to find a solution:

My Acer Revo RL80 is a fantastic XBMC box (the other day I was recording 3 HD streams whilst watching a 1080p movie with 5.1 DTS sound without a single stutter... not bad for a dual-core Celeron).

I've installed a genuine RL80 IR received, hooked up to the motherboard and have a genuine RL80 remote control (the one with the remote on one site and keyboard on the other).

I've followed the instructions to patch the registry to get it up and running, and even the keyboard now works (previously this was problematic).

So far, so good.

However, certain buttons on the remote still don't work - for example, the red, green, yellow and blue buttons, plus the TV buttons (live TV, recorded TV and EPG).

I've mapped the coloured buttons in XBMC by editing keyboard.xml. I've mapped the TV buttons using XBMC's MCE Remote plug-in.

Bizarrely, the key mappings work with my original MCE (RC6) remote, but not with the Acer remote.

Even more bizarrely, whilst the ShowKey app doesn't recognise the offending buttons, Intelliremote does, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware fault - driver issue, perhaps?

I like to keep my system as streamlined as possible so don't want to use Intelliremote unless I really have to.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

(Incidentally, I've also tried getting the remote to work with my original HP MCE IR blaster and get exactly the same problem.)

Any help gratefully received, thank you.

This may not apply for your remotes but -

Does your new remote have a 'learn' feature?  I had a situation where a few buttons on a new remote could not be programmed. Digging deeper I discovered a learn feature where the new remote would learn the signals from the old remote.  Just in case this will work for you, it may be worth checking out.

    Hi Leho,

Thanks for the suggestion, however the RL80's remote doesn't appear to have a learning function, and there's next to no information available online as to how this remote works / is configured etc.

Unsurprisingly there's no information on Acer's website either.

Hopefully I'll get this sorted eventually, as it'd be nice to have just this one remote control with it's keyboard on the reverse side, rather than a remote control AND a keyboard cluttering up my sofa!

    Thanks again,

    Dan

Pity learn won't work for you.  It was worth a desperate shot.

I agree with you that the general lack of information is sad.

Yes, Acer's lack of support / info is frustrating, and the response I received from Tech Support recently was pitiful...

"Regarding your query, as you mentioned that only few buttons work on the IR Receiver, it does not seems to be a hardware issue on the computer. The IR Receiver may be not fully compatible with this computer. It might be due to settings which needs to changed or altered on the computer. Unfortunately, we are not trained on software issues as we are the hardware technicians. For further assistance, please provide the date of purchase and the name of the store from where the unit was purchased from."

So what is the point of Acer Technical Support then, and how will knowing I purchased this from Maplin on 12th May help?

Have to say, great machine, but Acer seriously need to brush up on their service skills.
