PC: ACER AOA-150-1670

OS: Windows XP

Issues: Virtual Memory Space Overflow, Garbled Audio: Now OS won't start.

Suspect: Virus  (Note: AVG Free running, and this PC is for special purpose, no significant websurfing)

First steps taken: Ran four antivirus programs; AVG, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, TDSSKiller

Results: no viruses detected

AVG appeared to be causing Overflow; temporarily stopped AVG, overflow appeared to stop.  Uninstalled AVG; virtual memory overflow stopped.

Remaining problem garbled audio.

Steps taken: Current Realtek Audio driver version 5.10.0.5628 5/20/2008.  Went to ACER website inserted SNID and the suggested Realtek driver update was version 5.10.0.6010.  Downloaded the zip file, created a restore point, then ran the setup.  The setup required a restart.  On restart at the Acer Aspire One splash page a window popped-up stated that an application "Isass.exe" would not initialize, press OK to terminate program.  After pressing OK (twice) the restart stalls at the splash screen and there is no disk activity.

Reading up on "Isass.exe" suggests it's a virus.  Unfortunately, the only alternatives to a normal restart appears to be the Alt-F10 recovery process, but according to that it will wipe the C-drive.

Isn't there away to run the System Restore at bootup, so that I can go back to the restore point I created before installing the new audio driver?

    This is a follow-up:

Used F8 on Boot to go to startup menu and selected "Safe Mode"; it began to start in safe-mode, but failed again with the same popup saying lsass.exe failed to initialize, click Ok to terminate.  But after clicking Ok, there a short disk activity then it stops at a blank screen with the words "Safe Mode" around the corners.  Tried booting with last known go configuration, still didn't work same popup.  Tried Safe-Mode with Command prompt, same failure.  I may have to remove the drive and insert it into a USB drive housing and examine it on another PC.
