Aspire 5551 crashes when closing lid on Windows XP but not under Windows 7
Hi there.
My laptop crashes when I close the lid, but only under Windows XP. Under Windows 7 everything is fine. It is set to do nothing when the lid closes and yet it still crashes. The screen freezes completely, lights stop flashing, etc. I then have to hold the power button in for several seconds to switch it off.
I have an Acer Aspire 5551 laptop which originally shipped with Windows 7 64-bit. I still require Windows XP 32-bit and as a virtual machine did not resolve my issue, I decided to set up a dual boot configuration. I soon discovered finding Windows XP drivers for a laptop that (to my knowledge) never shipped with anything other than Windows 7, was rather difficult. Never the less, I eventually found compatible drivers and got everything working. Wireless, graphics, the lot. Both sleep and hibernate work on both OS's.
Unfortunately, I fear it may be a driver problem causing this crash, so I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me could help point me in the right direction, as to what driver may be at fault. I tried many different drivers from various sources before I found ones that would work, so I am loathed to try and "update" the ones I have, as it could just break things again...
I'm not expecting a great and/or quick fix here but any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Windows XP seems to run much better than the OS the laptop was designed for!
