Can I downgrade my V5-471 to Windows 7?

I have a V5-471 and would like to wipe Win8 and install Win7.

I have heard you can switch the BIOS to legacy mode and then use the Recovery made Win8 to install Win7. Is this possible?

As far as I know you cannot use a Win8 backup to install Win7!!

(I purchased Win7 Ultimate and installed that on my M5.)

You will also need to ensure you disable 'secure boot' - you'll get nowhere unless you do.

Do a seach on the site. There are other excellent posts here. Read all you can first - you are more likely to avoid shooting yourself in the foot!

Thanks Alan, well I'm definitely not going to purchase another version of Windows for the same laptop. Win8 is just to fragmented in terms of GUI operation. Linux here I come.

I gather that Linux is a pretty straight forward install and runs well although that's purely hearsay as I have never tried (not my thing).

I need Windows for development and support in a number of languages so my choice was made for me. (Fortunately I have been very pleased with Win7.)

I would have paid almost anything to be rid of Win8!!

Linux is easy to install and configure, compared to when I used it for the first time in 98! Smiley Wink Ubuntu 13.04 even has the ability to use the UEFI secure boot. Though I might use Mint or Debian, undecided on that front.

Ah, days gone by. I do have a copy of Redhat 6.something and Suse here somewhere. I'm sure you remember - no drivers, piles of useless shovelware etc!
The UEFI, secure boot, hardware lock down debacle clearly has some way to run yet and much fur will fly given the threat to Linux and possible legal challenges et al.
Consequently, I for one will avoid it like the plague. (There will always be ways around it but not for the common man.)
Clearly, Microsoft has seen where Apple has gone with this and is running full tilt to catch up and indeed pass. I find it breath taking how quickly they have moved on this.
    Rant over.
My only exposure to Debian is a variety running on a Raspberry-Pi. A bit of fun but still very poor in my mind. I'm sure the real thing is significantly better though.
The Pi now has good old RISC OS up and running - great stuff - now there's nostalgia for you!
I digress. Which ever Linux you choose I hope it goes well for you!
