Is my Iconia B repairable?

HI, i bought my son an iconia b for his birthday last month, its been brilliant and he loves it.

i've been trying to get a suitable case or protective skin for it but Acer don't seem to do one and the generic ones we've tried just don't seem to fit.

He takes exagerated care with it but last night he was walking through the house with it at clipped a door, i wasn't particularly concerned because he barely touched the door, but when he turned it on the screen was frozen with a dramatic gash on the display. He's desperately disappointed.

I contacted Acer support and explained what had happened, i wasn't expecting the tablet to be covered in the warranty but i was a bit taken back when i was told it would cost £55 to assess the damage. For a £99 tablet it seems excessive to be potentially told its unfixable? It makes the cost of a replacement some 50% more expensive?

I don't know much about this, but as there is no physical damge to the tablet i assume its an LCD issue? Is it worth my while trying to get it fixed.

I don't think i can get an acer replacement if not, if i can't buy a good enough cover i'll have to go elsewhere.
