Keyboard Keys Functioning Randomly (And, other Weird Behavior)

I just bought a manufacture refurbished Acer M-M5-481PT-6644 and in the last month I keep getting weird behavior with my keys, Internet explorer and certain apps. I tried to go to chat and was unpleased to find my serial number is not eligible even though this is a fairly new computer model manufactured in October and purchased by me in April. (That irritates me considering the major flaws I am finding with no way to fix the problems, I am a computer developer and I cannot recommend this model if it is this unstable).

1. Sometimes my keys randomly decided to initiate their function for instance I will be pressing arrow keys and the sound or brightness function will pop up for no reason.

2. Sometimes in internet explorer the keys simple will not type characters in some field objects but are fine in others on the same screen. Just today while trying to enter a credit card number that was split into four fields but when I got to the second field when I tried to enter the numbers any number I typed would either not type in or make internet explorer change tabs.

3. I had to disable Acer Instant Update today too because "Dummy Form" keep causing slowdowns freezes and difficulties on shutdown and restart. I would like to use it but it seems to be unstable as reported by many.

4. For some reason many minor apps that I click on go to the splash screen but then immediately close and never load properly. Weirdly one of them worked when I first installed it "NASA Picture of the day" but even without changing anything (nothing new installed, no new drivers) this program started behaving like others already had. Most of these apps are minor a short list is 'ParticleArt' a particle based line art drawing program, Cloud Manga Reader, Batman Video App, Windows News. Only considering this is a minor annoyance I am not as concerned accept that many Acer users are complaining of this behavior and that it eventually affects more important programs on their systems.

5. There a some things I would like to pass on to Acer as a designer.

First the Acer Theft Shield has two big problems. The loud alarm can be defeated by simply plugging in headphones. Second it can be too sensitive. I simply moved a little and it set it off in my home tests. I suggest a possible solution would be to setup an option silent alarm. This could be tied to a cell phone via a SMS service. Possibly they could partner with Lowjack and others like it to offer an alert that can start recording the location of the computer in case it has been stolen. Then if the owner confirms the alarm was false by logging in and entering a password this would save unnecessary work of people auditing the data until it is reported stolen/lost. Also if the alarm was not false theft loss companies would have an accurate picture of where it was lost and what directions it may have gone.

Second I cannot get around the fact that the Acer M Timeline U included everything that windows 7 supported but none of the Acer Ultrabook lines do this for Windows 8. Current Acer M Ultra books have the dual HD, Touch Screen, and CD drive many of us need but lacks the Video Graphics the M Timeline U had. The V series offers most of this and a graphics chip but none have touch screens. The S series lacks a large enough hard drive, graphics chip and CD drive and costs a lot considering that all the other Acer models solid state hard drives can be easily upgraded for cheaper than buying an S series. Can I suggest that you offer at least one Ultrabook model all in one with a touch screen, Graphics chip, Dual HD, and CD drive. It seems like that would have all fit into the M Timeline U form factor if the touch screen had just been added or if the V series had a touch screen. Maybe even consider a convertible touch screen similar to the overpriced competitions and you would beat them all out since most of them are not offering the CD drive or dual hard drives.

We appreciate the feedback, there are several pieces of information that I can pass on regarding the design and use of the M5.

As far as the technical issues you're having, the keyboard sounds like it's an issue your warranty would cover. Please review the paperwork that came with your unit. LSI, our partner, will handle any warranty issues for you. If you are not able to locate that information, feel free to send me a private message and I'll get the details for you.
