Nvidia 9800m GTS, and upgrade, question

Currently running: Gateway P7805u FX, GPU is 9800M GTS. Just bought it used a few days ago, so pardon my ignorance. I've searched around and not found many answers to what I am asking.

Question 1: Will my GPU support dual external monitors if I'm not utilizing the laptop screen? The set-up I'm considering will be one display via HDMI, and the other via the VGA output, with the laptop lid closed. I already know about the quality difference, just need to know if I will be able to run both these monitors without a problem.

Anyone try this before? Would be nice to know before I buy a new display for this purpose. I have heard that some motherboards restrict this capability, even though the GPU can support it. So I would like to be positive before spending a few hundred to find out.

As a side note, I've seen some people have a built-in screen that supports a 1920x1200 resolution, and a 1gb GPU. My machine only has a 1440x900 display, so does this mean my card is the original 512mb GPU? If so, will this make my machine less able to run the dual screen setup I'm asking? I'm running a second display at 1920x1080 currently, but I don't know if that makes a difference.

Question 2: Is it possible to upgrade the GPU in this to support dual digital outputs? I'd like to consider dual HDMI or dual DVI  outputs (or any combo that works), so I can run both displays on a digital signal. If not, is it cost effective to upgrade the internals, or should I consider just building a tower instead? I'd prefer the dual digital display setup,to avoid a lack in quality, but it isn't necessary since the most GPU demanding programmes I'll be using are for DVD viewing and the occassional gaming. Still, dual HD outputs would be more enjoyable.

I'm not geuinely worried about having the highest definition possible, as much as functionality. However; if a GPU upgrade for about 100-200 will give me a dual digital output for twin digital display use, I can't say no. I'd rather spend 200 than build a tower for 500 plus when I'll still replace most internals in a few yeaers. If it's more cost effective to build a tower for dual digital display use, any GPU recommendations? I may consider selling my current computers to build a new one, so not a bad idea to keep my options open and clear.

The GPU will support only one external monitor at a time.  Yes, the original GPU that came in this model has 512MB GDDR3 dedicated video RAM.

We would suggest a desktop for extensive use of a dual monitor setup.
