W510 and google earth directX

Hi all!

I recently got a w510 and I am overall happy about it, but have been facing trouble with Direct X applications. It is stated that the graphics component can handle DX 9, but running for example Google Earth leads to freezing of the driver.

I see that the graphics drivers included in the latest update package (2.08) are about a year old. Is that the problem? I do not want to run any games on the tablet, but basic applications like google earth is something I was expecting to be able to run on the go.

Also I saw that HP released newer drivers for the graphics component (dated January 2013) but I am unable to install them. If you change the inf file to the correct subvendor then you get an error about the drivers not been digitaly signed. And if I try to do a new boot with digital signining disabled when I get to the screen where I have to choose an option using numbers or the F-keys the hardware keyboard is not working (probaby no drivers yet loaded) and I found no way to bring up a software keyboard so I guess we cannot even access safe mode from the w510 (and all windows 8 tablets).

Problem solved. It all happened because of crappy drivers.

I managed to install the newer 9.14.1130 (1/8/2013) drivers that were made available for HP Envy x2.

In order to do that you have to edit the inf file, then disable driver signing and installing the drivers manually.

Google earth runs now without trouble in DirectX mode and also directX performance is better.

I hope Acer soon deploys a new driver package that includes this driver.

Google Earth will run very nicely in OpenGL mode !

Just decline the message that says....."bla bla bla, we recommend directx  bla bla bla" and you will see it works!

On the [KMD.Mfg] part of the inf file just swap the entries in the HP driver with the ones from the latest Acer one.

Also I have to state that I am not responsible if something bad happens to your computer by trying this Smiley Happy

Internet Explorer 10 will not run Google Earth, except in the light mode, Firefox, Chrome and Opera will run Google Earth. I updated my graphics driver also from the HP Envy.

AFAIAC this is one of the dumber aspects of Windows 8. As noticed F8 during boot does not work (but F12 does if enabled in the BIOS setup so know it recognises a USB keyboard).

To boot into Safe Mode you have to be able to boot normally then run MSCONFIG . Select BOOTthen check the box for Safe Mode. Close and reboot.

What you are supposed to do if you cannot boot normally is not explained.

See also http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/ss/windows-8-safe-mode.htm I have not been able to make shift-F8 work.

It's actually a bit easier than that. Hold the shift key while selecting restart will work as well.

Click on "Like" if you find my answer useful or click on "Yes" if it answers your question.

Yes  hold the shift key on a keyboard down when pressing restart and you can navigate a few windows to reach one that will restart into the selection screen. You can also get there from the login screen which is handy.

    but

    - you have to be able to boot into windows

    and

    - you need a keyboard attached

the msconfig method still needs a boot but can be done with a touch scream.
