Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed a weird behavior with my Acer laptop (Aspire 5, model A515-56) that I haven’t seen discussed anywhere yet. Hoping someone here has come across it or can help me troubleshoot.
What happens:
If I close the lid during normal operation and then open it, the laptop wakes from sleep just fine.
- However, if I completely shut it down and then open the lid (cold boot), the laptop doesn’t power on—nothing happens unless I press the power button manually. No LEDs, no fans, just dead silence.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Updated BIOS to the latest version via Acer Support.
- Disabled Fast Startup in Windows 11 and in UEFI settings.
- Ensured “Wake on Lid Open” is enabled in BIOS (though Acer’s UI calls it something vague like “Power Cover Opener”).
- Checked Windows Event Logs—nothing notable around the times it fails to wake.
Fun side note: I was multitasking earlier and had my Dunkin Donuts Muffins Menu open in Chrome as a midday snack reference—and everything worked perfectly fine when the system was running. So I’m fairly confident the screen/dashboard layer isn't involved—it’s purely a power/BIOS timing issue.
Questions I have:
- Has anyone seen a similar cold-boot power behavior on this or other Acer models?
- Any specific BIOS settings (like “ErP,” “Deep Sleep,” “Modern Standby”) that could influence lid-open behavior?
- Is there a Windows driver or firmware workaround that ensures the lid-open event triggers a boot even from full shutdown?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions—this one’s got me scratching my head!
