eMachines g730g overheating, no adjustment in coolingsystem

Options

Hello everyone. I got an old eMachines g730g with i3 330m and radeon hd 5650. I noticed that this laptop is overheating with two tabs in chrome and video running. AIDA64 shows that the cooling system fan is only running at 30%. Since the BIOS is minimalistic, I tried various applications like SpeedFAN and NoteBook Fan etc. But none of them can help me change the fan speed. What should I do? There is Windows 7 on board.

🖥️ Upgrade Strategy for eMachines G730G Legacy Laptop

Hi @Boi345345345345 ! With your eMachines G730G rocking an i3-330M and Radeon HD 5650, it's impressive it's still running — but totally understandable that thermal throttling and limited BIOS options are holding you back. If apps like SpeedFAN aren't working, it's likely due to hardware limitations from that generation.

Here’s a two-part suggestion that balances performance and preservation:

    1. 💾 Repurpose with Linux Instead of pushing Windows 7 or struggling with fan controls, consider installing a lightweight Linux distro (like Linux Mint XFCE or Lubuntu). These are optimized for older hardware and will extend the laptop’s life as a handy backup, basic web browser, or file server — with far less heat output.
    2. 💻 Migrate to a New Windows 11 Machine For everyday tasks, gaming, or productivity, a modern laptop with Windows 11 is a smart investment. You’ll get better energy efficiency, cooling control, and security updates. Plus, newer systems offer far more flexibility with BIOS tuning, fan management (via apps or firmware), and thermal throttling.

Keeping the old machine around as a Linux backup is both nostalgic and practical. And when paired with a new system, it’s like having the best of both worlds: retro utility and modern performance.

Want help choosing a beginner-friendly Linux distro or a solid upgrade machine under budget? I’d be happy to dig up options for you.

You need to buy either a new cooling fan or the whole Cooling Fan + Heatsink + THERMAL for this old Acer eMachines E730G that you have, The link above is for one these thermals and on eBay so either buy the whole thing or just buy a new fan with the same specs. Good luck
