Do a Hard Reset, as its probably an EC or Chipset chip freezing issue that needs resetting properly first that will and could reengage the main screen of your Aspire 5742 laptop, so try that, as the laptops screen should work when you disconnect the external 2nd monitor screen. Otherwise you could have a faulty LCD cable or screen, so you need to look at those hardware components that I've included below.

Have a look at these hardware components if the hard reset doesn't work, as this laptop is like 15 years since it was released and these hardware components could be faulty.

Hard Reset - Remove the battery and press the power key for 15 seconds to release all power from the laptop, then undo the HDD and RAM door and take the RAM out and then take the ODD/DVD out, then take the RTC/BIOS battery out and short the battery case +&- pins at the board socket to reset CMOS

Short the +&- pins at this plug to reset CMOS with metal tweezers or screwdriver.

Leave the laptop like that for at least 30 to 60min so that EC and Chipset chips reset completely and then reconnect everything, if you have 2x ram modules, only connect 1x ram module and alternate the two ram modules and see the laptops screen reengages properly.
