Hi isharoku, Linux does use BIOS/UEFI, but updating it is trickier since most manufacturers (including Acer) only provide BIOS updates as .exe files meant for Windows.

You were told to check LVFS/fwupd—that’s correct in theory, but Acer hasn’t published any updates for the Helios Neo 16S AI to LVFS yet, so fwupd won’t find anything.

🛠️ How to Update BIOS from Linux

    You’ve got two solid options:

    1. FreeDOS USB Method (No Windows Needed)
      • Format a USB stick using Rufus
      • Choose FreeDOS as the boot type
      • Copy the BIOS .exe file to the USB
      • Boot into the USB and run the file in DOS environment (This is safe and doesn’t require Windows at all.)
    2. Temporary Windows Install (If You’re Comfortable)
      • Install Windows to a second SSD or small partition
      • Use it just to run the BIOS updater
      • Then wipe it and go back to Linux

If you prefer staying Windows-free, FreeDOS is the way to go. Let me know and I can guide you through creating the USB step by step.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Download the BIOS update
    2. Prepare the bootable USB drive
    3. Boot into FreeDOS
    4. Run the BIOS update
    5. Restart and verify

Remember to back up your data before performing a BIOS update.
