Regards the above whilst idling a pop up appears in less than a minute saying I need to hide my VPN then the desktop and mouse lock up. Using a USB mouse the cursor moves over the desktop but it's still unresponsive. Tried all the suggestions but nothing works it will not even allow a SFC scan in Powershell. It runs an SSD that was installed about 10 years ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Regards, Landcruiser.

    Hi Landcruiser 👋

If the laptop now refuses to boot completely, and you can't access tools like HWiNFO or even get to BIOS reliably, it's likely the SSD or HDD has failed mechanically or hit a critical firmware fault.

At this point, it's best to:

    • 🧯 Stop trying to power it repeatedly, as that could risk further damage.
    • 🧰 Bring it to a repair center where they can:
      • Confirm whether the storage device is still detectable
      • Test with a known-good SSD/HDD
      • Recover any important files if possible

💡 Even a low-cost SATA SSD replacement can bring the system back to life if the rest of the hardware is still solid. The Aspire ES 15 is compatible with most 2.5" SATA drives.

Let us know what the shop finds — happy to help choose a replacement or walk through reinstalling Windows once the system’s back up.
