Acer Aspire 7 battery won't charge above 3% and stops charging when GPU is at 100% (135W charger)

Hi all,

I have an Acer Aspire 7 (A715-75G) with a 135W charger and a new battery (replaced myself, works fine I think). I'm running into a strange issue:

  • My laptop only charges up to 3% and then stops, even though it says "Plugged in".
  • The charging LED blinks orange constantly.
  • When I open a game that uses the GPU hard, the battery stops charging entirely.
  • I already:
    • Replaced the thermal paste
    • Installed a new battery (54Wh, fully detected)
    • Used a 135W Acer charger (confirmed on label)
  • Battery report (powercfg /batteryreport) shows full design capacity, brand new condition.

This only seems to happen when the GPU usage spikes to 100%, even though temps are low after new thermal paste.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Hi, are you using the new Acer Care Center version 4.00.3058 dated 2025/04/29? If not install that and don't use battery Optimizer or 80% battery charge limiter. After installing a new battery or a Windows version you have to perform a full charge cycle for BIOS and Windows to register the full charge capacity. Reset BIOS with F9 and save changes (in BIOS) with F10. Boot to Windows and disable Fast Startup/Hibernate in "Change what closing the lid does" and "Change settings currently unavailable". Reset Power Plan in "Edit power Plan" and uninstall the 2 battery drivers (see red circle picture)

Reboot and shut down, close the lid. Plug in the power adapter make sure the plug has the correct diameter 5.5mm x 1.7mm and fits tight in the slot, you should hear a click when fully inserted. Charge the battery till the amber battery LED turns blue and wait an extra 10 minutes. Open the lid and boot to Windows, verify that the battery meter on the taskbar reads 100%. Unplug the adapter and work with the battery only till the laptop shuts down on it own, do not press the power button, do not suspend, just close the lid and plug in the power adapter again. repeat the charging procedure with the lid closed till the battery LED turns blue again. That's it.

Unfortunately, this hasn’t made a difference. The battery is now down to 2%, and while the system shows “charging,” the percentage doesn’t increase at all. It also doesn’t decrease, unless I unplug the charger, at which point it immediately starts to drain.

I suspect a bad battery, there are a lot of refurbished and fake batteries offered on the web, the Smart chip inside the battery may also be malfunctioning, there should be some battery drainage evident even if new, not showing exactly the design capacity. This is a good battery: Battery for Acer Aspire 7 A715-75G-77UY,replacement Acer Aspire 7 A715-75G-77UY laptop battery from Singapore(48Wh,3 cells) Note that there are 2 different types, make sure you have the correct battery model. This is a 2019 laptop and you may have power rail issues, have the motherboard checked by an Acer accredited repair shop near you.
