Is it possible to put liquid metal onto the GPU heatsink? PHN16-71-51TN (Predator Helios Neo 16)

Is it possible to put liquid metal onto the GPU heatsink? What is the material of the heatsink, I saw some teardown vid, it seems that the GPU heatsink is either bare copper or Tin Platted copper as opposed to the CPU Nickel Plated heatink. I could add some sealing to the gpu part, more concerned on corroding the heatsink though.

Or should I use some Phasesheet such as Honeywell PTM 7950/ThermalGrizzly phase sheet?

LMK, gotta tame this firenest

Yes, it is possible to apply liquid metal to the GPU heatsink of the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (PHN16-71), but there are important considerations:

    • Material Compatibility: The GPU heatsink appears to be bare copper or tin-plated copper, unlike the nickel-plated CPU heatsink. Liquid metal can corrode certain metals, so applying it directly to copper requires careful sealing to prevent damage.
    • Risk of Spillage: Liquid metal is highly conductive. If it spreads beyond the intended area, it can cause short circuits and damage the laptop.
    • Alternative Solutions: Some users suggest using phase-change thermal pads like Honeywell PTM 7950 or Thermal Grizzly phase sheets as safer alternatives.
    • Manufacturer Recommendations: Acer has used liquid metal on some models, but improper application can lead to overheating or hardware failure

I have the same laptop with an i5 CPU and it runs very cool, update BIOS with version 1.18 and install PredatorSense from the Microsoft Store, use Best power efficiency mode in Power & Battery settings (see red box, picture).

The Predator Neo PHN16-71 heatsink is safe to put liquid metal on as Acer applies liquid metal to the cpu and the gpu chip heatsink is part and made of the same material as at the cpu section that has liquid metal paste.

Have a look at the official Acer service guide "Liquid Metal Model Maintenance SOP (Service Kit PDF" below that I've included for you as a guide, which is from the PHN16-72 that applies to the PHN16-71 model too.

But either buy the Acer liquid metal kit shown in that guide and follow that the official Acer application guide, or and if you use a different liquid metal paste, follow the manufacturers application guide for that liquid metal paste. Btw I've use the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal  on a Nitro gaming laptop and that is an excellent paste, so consider using that. Good luck and hope this helps you out some more.

Thank you for the information. However, it appears that the standard operating procedure only covers the CPU section and doesn't address the GPU. In a teardown video by UFIXTEK (link:

the GPU area is shown to have a different type of plating under the heatsink, with no sealing present. Interestingly, there seems to be some boxed nickel lining around the GPU, but no foam sealing is visible around the GPU part, I could add some sealant from thermal grizzly "shield coating" and could try to cut-up some high density sheet foam around it. Either that or I'll just use some Phasesheet material 🤫
