Laptop not turning on in Acer Swift 3 SF314

Laptop is 13 months old and will not turn on. Blue power light comes on for maybe 10 seconds and then turns off. Nothing works - I've used the reset button, replaced the cmos, disconnected the main battery etc etc. It's one month out of warranty and Acer aren't interested at all. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, do the Power drain + CMOS reset: Open the back of the laptop and disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard. Locate the CMOS module (with 2 twisted wires Red and Black) and remove the coin battery. Shorten the +/- terminals inside the CMOS capsule for 2 seconds with a bended paperclip and put the coin battery back with the + sign facing up, close the CMOS capsule. Next, press the Power Button on the keyboard for 10-15 seconds after that reconnect the battery cable to the motherboard. Close the laptop, plug-in the adapter and try to boot. Note that he first SF314-55-58P9, was released on April 24, 2019 so make sure your battery is still in good shape, check the Manufacturer Date on the battery or at the back of the laptop.

Please measure the voltage/ampere value of the adapter and battery before following the instructions below (You need to be a repairman). Check if the values are normal or abnormal. If they are abnormal, please replace the abnormal, for example; if it is an adapter, get a new one.

    If the values are normal and there is no problem;

    • Press and hold the ON/OFF button for 10 seconds to wake it up from sleep mode, then turn it back on and check. If the problem persists, go to the next one.
    • Disable the battery and charging adapter.
    • If there are two RAMs, remove them and clean the copper teeth with an eraser,
    • Then turn the PC upside down and press and pull the on/off button 7 times in series and repeat. (This will discharge the remaining static electricity inside.)
    • Change the places of the RAM sequentially, for example; if there are 2 RAMs, try inserting one and try different slots.
    • Plug in the charging adapter and turn it on, if the image appears, there is no problem, collect the other parts and use it.
    • Another method is to use it with a battery, not a charging adapter.

If none of these work, there may be a problem with the power supply on the motherboard. Please take it to a computer repair shop.

The biggest reason why the problems are not solvedis if someone who says there is a problem with the GPU says; If I change the case, will the problem be solved? That's the whole point! The concepts are different! We should not go off topic.

OK thanks will try it. Unit is only 13 months old so the battery is still in good shape. CMOS I have already changed, but I will try again with the additional steps you have outlined.

Hi, what is your full SF314 model, always post your full model and full Windows11 version so we can advise focused, replacing a CMOS battery does not reset the BIOS EEPROM, only shortening the module inside or shortening the CMOS terminal (small 2 wire plug) will do that. 😉

Its SF314-43-R71A. The cmos is wired - its not a button cell.

The Swift SF314-43 model has a button bios battery, try and do a hard reset by taking the main battery out and then reset the CMOS by shorting the bios battery mobo plug at its +&- pins with a metal pair of tweezers or a metal screwdriver at the red circled plug shown below.

Note: that a hard reset is allot better and more efficient in resetting the EC, chipset and bios chips than doing a battery reset by pressing the pin at the bottom of the laptop. One of the other reason that your laptop is not turning on is because your laptops main battery might be depleted and needs changing as these batteries lifespan is about 4 years max before they start to cause problems, so they need replacing, or your laptops main power rail first mosfet at the charging port, is shorted and needs replacing. Try all that as afterwards your laptop should boot properly. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, but I've tried all of these and none help. I've reset the cmos (including shorting pins) and it still won't turn on. Power light comes on and then turns off again after 3 or 4 seconds. Occasionally if you repeatedly press the power button (for 5 or 6 minutes) it will turn on. At that point it works fine and the main battery works as expected. Turn it off and you are back to square 1.

If you tried the hard rest then its the main power rail that has a shorted mosfet or a capacitor and you need to take your laptop to a technician that has all the proper tools to fix your Swift laptop. Do not try to fix this yourself as you will damage the laptop using the wrong tools. Good luck.

I do think it is battery related though. On the odd occasion that it works it will work fine (including turning on and off) but if you leave it for 2 hours then it won't turn back on. In addition the system clock is always wrong - hence why i think it's a cmos issue.

Here's a short video showing the power issue

That is a power rail issue, it could be the BQ chip that adjusts power to the power rail as the laptop does power on but then disconnects. It could also be the battery as your Swift 3 SF314-43 is a 2021 released laptop (don't know how long you have had this laptop) as these batteries last between 3-4 years so it could be that your battery is faulty and can't provide the charge that it requires. The best is to take your laptop to a technician and get them to pinpoint the exact fault and get the laptop fixed properly.

Ive only had the laptop 13 months so I think it's unlikely to be the battery. On the odd occasion I do manage to get it to work the battery lasts hours so it must be something else power related. Thanks for your help.
