Acer Nitro N50-640 issue - won't even boot properly

Hi all,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my Acer Nitro N50 (model DG.E2VEQ.004). The PC specs are:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5‑12400F
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (2x8GB, 3200 MHz)
  • Storage: 512 GB NVMe SSD + 1 TB Seagate HDD
  • Motherboard: Intel B660
  • OS Attempted: Windows 11, Linux (multiple distros)

Issue:

I can boot Live USBs (Linux, Windows PE, etc.) with no issues — everything works fine, GPU is detected, no crashes. But as soon as I try to:

  • Install Windows 11 → it fails with "Windows could not be installed" errors.
  • Install Linux → installs seemingly fine, but on first boot it gets stuck after login.
  • Boot any OS installed to SSD or HDD → I get a gray screen after login, nothing else.

This happens on both internal drives. It doesn’t matter whether I use SSD or HDD, Linux or Windows — the problem persists. But booting from USB always works fine.

What I've Tried:

  • Ran MemTest86: No RAM errors after one full pass.
  • CPU stress test: No issues or overheating.
  • NVIDIA drivers: I had graphical artifacts earlier but updating drivers fixed that temporarily.
  • Disabled Secure Boot, tried UEFI/Legacy modes.
  • Swapped drives, wiped partitions, tried fresh installs many times.
  • Haven’t updated BIOS yet, but wondering if that’s relevant.
  • Suspected VMD/RST might be interfering but not sure if that’s enabled or needed for this Acer motherboard.

Important Notes:

  • I’m a developer and have done many OS installs before.
  • This issue appeared suddenly — I used the system normally in the morning, then came back later, and after logging into Windows, it only showed a gray screen. Since then, no OS boots from internal storage anymore.
  • Could the motherboard, storage controller, or VMD setting be causing this?

Looking for suggestions on:

  • BIOS settings (VMD, SATA/NVMe config, UEFI tweaks)
  • Disk controller or firmware issues?
  • Anything specific to Acer or this B660 chipset?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Make sure that you first have the N50-640 bios version R01-B1 installed as this bios fixes and updates the CRB version to CRB57, iRST version to 19.5.0.5676, GOP version to 17.0.1077, CSME version to 16.1.25.1932v3 and MCU to m_03_90672_00000025.

Also, you need to prepare a proper Rufus 4.7 bootable drive and follow their guide to install Win-11 version 24H2 OS properly, and make sure that on the Rufus bootable USB you also have the N50-640 desktops IRST (Intel® Rapid Storage Technology) Driver version 19.2.0.1003 folder inside the bootable installation USB, as you also need to install this driver.

Then when you get to the Win-11 installation section @ Where do you want to install Windows? > Load driver > you install this IRST driver so that the Win-11 version 24H2 can recognized and can be installed on the boot M2_2 Gen 4 x4 slot (that is above the video card PCIe 16 Х slot) also, use a new M.2 SSD drive, I suggest that you buy a Samsung 990 Pro + Heatsink M.2 SSD drive as that will be the best choice for this desktop, as it will run really quickly.

Note: that the M2_3 (that is near the SATA1~ 2 slots) is a Gen 3 x4 / SATA 6GB/s type drive slot on this desktops mobo. As that is probably where you are going wrong with the Win-11 installation as you haven’t installed the IRST driver nor the last bios.

Otherwise, you either have a faulty 512GB M.2 drive or have a faulty mobo as all the M.2 and SATA III slots should install Win-11 on their drives. Good luck and hope this assists you further.
