Is the temperature normal to reach such high temperatures (100°C) in Helios Neo 16 (14900HX) Users

I hope that people who used the exact same category and model will answer my question.

I’d like to share a concern regarding the thermal performance of the device and ask if what I'm experiencing is considered normal.

Specifications:

CPU: Intel Core i9-14900HX

RAM: 16GB DDR5 5600MHz

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060

Storage: 1TB SSD

The issue:

While monitoring the system via PredatorSense:

During rendering or heavy tasks, the CPU temperature reaches 100°C, even though the fans are running at maximum speed.

Even with light to moderate usage, I notice that temperatures are still quite high.

In Eco Mode, temperatures drop to around 50°–60°C but rise significantly in other performance modes.

Note: This behavior has been present since the very first time I turned the laptop on — the device is brand new.

Also, this occurs even when the ambient room temperature is between 25°C and 30°C.

My question is: -

Is it normal for the CPU to reach such high temperatures (100°C) even with max fan speed, especially for a new device in a moderate ambient environment? Is this expected behavior for this kind of hardware?

Your PHN16-72 laptop needs its bios to be updated first as its essential that your laptops bios is updated to the last version 1.16, as this bios has the Intel cpu microcode fix that fixed the i9-14900HX issues that Intel had with the 13th and 14th Gen cpu's, which overheated due a design high voltage problem.

Also make sure that you have the Win-11 last 24H2 version installed and all updated done to the latest OS build: 26100.3915, as all this is essential. Also be aware that these laptops are designed to work up to 110°C temps monetarily but not all the time as the fans speeds will compensate when temps reach their limit that this laptop is set to and the laptop will work perfectly at the below temps.

These are the Acer tested temps of the cpu that your latop should operate at in Default and Turbo modes

I updated the bios to 1.16 and updated to 24H2 and the temperature is still high. All drivers are updated to the latest version. I want someone who uses the same laptop to tell me what degrees it reaches, so I know if this is normal for this model or if there is a manufacturing defect. im wondering if your predator sense installation is faulty. please go to acer.co.uk and download the latest predator app. then press the start key and search add or remove. type in predator and uninstall everything named predator sense. reboot your pc. then install the new predator sense file and then make sure to reboot again before loading up predator sense. see if this helps.

let me know, it sounds like the sensors are not being read correctly by predator sense.

also does the machine feel like its actually that hot or is it just warm?

In these gaming laptops, btw, I’m using the PHN16-71 with the Thermaltake Massive 12 Max Notebook Cooler and my laptops temps are the same with only an i5-13500HX cpu and not like your upper spec i9-14900HX cpu, as the temps that you are getting are normal at 100°C with high end applications and especially gaming as this temp is only reached monetarily on the cpu as they spike to that level, these laptops cooling system are designed to compensate for these temps and to not reach 110°C which is the systems max shutdown temp.

Make sure that you have set the bios and the Predator Sense to use the NVidia gpu only (as that disables the Intel cpu graphics) and remember that these are high end gaming laptops and they are NOT like a desktop where you can compensate cooling with fancy cpu and gpu water cooling, and better case cooling fans etc, etc… as these laptops are designed to run up to 110°C temps and very rarely shut down and reach 110°C temps.

If you do allot of gaming, then I suggest that you change the paste on the cpu and gpu with liquid metal and do this every 4 months, as these pastes do deteriorate, as Acer applies oem liquid metal paste to the cpu only and that needs changing for best cpu cooling, I would apply liquid metal to the gpu also, as Acer only applies the normal paste to the gpu on these laptops. Btw, this is what I do and it works perfectly and my PHN16-71 never reaches 100°C in high end gaming, as doing that reduces temps also, as these laptops thermal modules and fans are massive and designed for high end gaming purposes and to not allow the laptop to shut down with high end gaming.

There is nothing extra that you can do to reduce temps in these laptops (unless you design a water cooling system yourself😁which is very hard, but it has been done on other laptops) one thing that you can buy/add when playing games is to buy a top end gaming multi fan laptop cooler like from Thermaltake Massive 12 Max Notebook Cooler as these coolers do compensate and reduce temps by at least 15-20°C and helps these laptops to run cooler. So do all the above and hope this helps you out further.
