Hello. I just bought the new laptop - PREDATOR HELIOS NEO 18 - and i installed 2 m2 disks inside - Kingston KC3000 and Samsung 990 EVO - and I got overheat for them… KC3000 I used for Windows 11 and Samsung i used like disk D.

KC3000 on idle was near 65 C degree. Samsung on idle was the same near 66 C.

When I copy big file from D to C I got - 75 on Kingston and speed 30 mb… Also, it's impossible to work in this way because 60+ it's not normal and m2 disks make throttling to very low speed…

On my old laptop - Lenovo Legion 5 17ACH6H all was good - Kingston was with Windows 10 and temps was near 40+, Samsung was as disk D and temps was lower 50.

So, the problem is in Acer laptop - I think motherboard uses always full power mode for these disks.

I change the Samsung 990 with ADATA SX8200PNP - and this help for disk D - now ADATA have 42-46 on idle instead of 66 for Samsung… Adata it's PCIe Gen3. In old Lenovo laptop ADATA was lower than 40 C.

PREDATOR HELIOS NEO 18 - overheating the M2 disks, got overheat for them.

The above 60 °C temps should not be happening with an M.2 SSD drive, get the 990 Pro + Heatsink and put a 3rd party heatsink on top of the Kingston KC3000 M.2 drive as it will reduce temps considerably, I'm using the Samsung 990 Pro + Heatsink in my PHN16-71 that fits 100% and the back lid can be closed and the temps are like below on idle and in gaming it never ever gets above 60°C

This is not the solution of problem that ACER PREDATOR laptop is doing. Problem in BIOS or in whole motherboard of this laptop.

Old laptop Lenovo don't have any of this problems - and temps was on 20 C degree lower that here.

I don't want to buy any new very expensive m2 disks and so on - i just want to use what works good in other laptops ! I want the fixes for BIOS of this laptop as minimum !

For example - where is option to select this - PCIe Gen3 - for m2 ports ?

The boot M.2 SSD drive especially in these laptops all run hot as they are used always, the slave M.2 does not, the PHN16-72 has 2x PCIe 4 x4 lane M.2 slots not PCIe3 for M.2, there are no settings for these drives in bios or PS. Buy a good M.2 drive cooler and put it on top of your M.2 drives, that is the only solution that you can do to keep these drives cool.

I think the best solution is to return this laptop back because of quality -

    1. bad design of motherboard - one of m2 disk is located above the chipset
    2. bad power management control for m2
    3. no possibility to change settings for m2 port from gen4 to get3

If I would like to buy a very expensive m2 disk - why I need ACER at all ? In this case, I can buy Dell Alienware or ASUS ROG…

And again - in Lenovo Legion 5 17ACH6H - temperature was for 20 C lower for the same disks ! Without buying any additional cooling and without having all these problems !

You should add the SSD heatsinks for both disks. PCIe Gen 4 has a higher transfer speed and will produce a lot of heat, unlike the PCIe Gen 3 from the Lenovo Legion.

Thank you and have a nice day!

If you don't want to listen to helpful advice then waste your money on another laptop. I'm using a PHN16-71 and both SSD1 and SSD2 have a Gen 4 X4 lane Samsung 990 Pro + Heatsink and I play high end gaming and do allot of video editing with this laptop and the M.2 drives don't overheat at all. Good luck.
