NO, there is no such thing, you need to know what you want in a laptop or desktop for it to do and chose accordingly for the right model for your applications. See the Acer site in your country as they have categories of what different model are best applied for or consult an Acer retail point and ask them as there are many different laptops for different applications or desktops for the same.

This is the Acer site page and its categories

Are they trying to make it as hard as possible to find the right model?

If I'm just looking for a basic laptop, what category would I need?

If you are looking for a laptop that is for office or normal use, choose the Aspire or Swift series.

Acer laptops are categorized into several series, including the business-oriented TravelMate, the budget-friendly Aspire, the premium and professional-focused Swift, and the gaming-centric Predator and Nitro lines.

TravelMate: Designed for business and professional use, known for durability and lightweight portability.
Aspire: A broad series covering a range of budget and performance levels, catering to general consumer needs.
Swift: A premium line of laptops with a focus on portability, thin and light design, and professional features.
Predator: Acer's high-end gaming laptop series, known for powerful performance and advanced features.
Nitro: Another gaming laptop series, offering a balance of performance and affordability.
Chromebook: Acer offers Chromebooks for users who prefer the Chrome OS.
Spin: Acer's 2-in-1 laptops that can be used as both a laptop and a tablet.

To choose the best Acer laptop, consider your primary use (work, gaming, general use), desired features (screen size, battery life, storage), and budget, then compare models like the Swift, Aspire, and Predator series based on your needs.

You can directly talk to Acer support/store to find the right model for you.

The Aspire page has another 16 options: https://www.acer.com/nl-nl/laptops/aspire

Is Acer trying to make it as hard as possible to choose a model or what?

The Acer Aspire laptop series is categorized by features, target users, and performance levels, including models like the Aspire 3 (budget-friendly), Aspire 5 (mid-range), Aspire 7 (high-end), and others like Spin (2-in-1), Swift (ultra-portable), and Nitro (gaming).

The best way is to speak to a Acer representative and tell your requirement, they will help you shortlist models according to your needs. Then you may compare and select the best that suits your daily needs.

That is a very basic requirement saying that "I'm just looking for a basic laptop, what category would I need?" it largely depends on your budget and specific needs. As posts say above, the Aspire range is a basic all-round laptop that is ideal for basic use, as it depends how you spec these laptops as the higher end Aspire laptops are very close to a gaming platform with dedicated gpu and ram, the Swift 14" is exactly the same but its a more of a portable platform because of its 14" size as the Swift can also have some very high specs for gaming/editing with up to 32GB ram. So its up to you to narrow these two models down to your budget, which no matter what we suggest if you can't afford our suggestions this exercise is just a theoretical suggestion😀
