Many Acer laptops are still using TN panels. Why's that?

The colors seem awful.

TN panels are less expensive and known for their fast response times and high refresh rates, making them a popular choice among gamers. TN Panel vs. IPS Display: A Comprehensive Guide to Making the Right Choice

Most Acer laptops use 60 Hz panels, which doesn't seem high refresh rate to me.

And most aren't targeted at gamers either.

So it's just for the cheapness?

Two reasons. First they are indeed cheap, which makes them the perfect option to any low end monitor.

But the other side is gamers. LCD still doesn’t match TN in terms of input lag timing. With a TN panel, pixel response times of as low as 4ms are very common, with 1 ms being rather common in even some cheap models.

Some LCD panels will get down to around 5ms, but were also talking about some rather high end LCD panels as well at that point.

OLED is the only other panel tech that can really compete in this, but OLED has a plethora of issues with monitors. First is screen burn. Monitors expose OLED panels to screen burn risks to a far higher degree then TV’s or smartphones do.

OLED also has production yield problems that when combined with the mediocre sales rates of monitors ( laptops are better, but it’s tricky even then), makes OLED production overall more costly to pursue.

Suffice it to say, TN still has a place in the market.

Acer laptops, particularly in the budget and mid-range categories, still sometimes use TN panels due to their lower cost and faster response times, making them a viable option for gamers and those prioritizing speed over image quality.

TN panels are generally cheaper to manufacture than IPS or VA panels, allowing Acer to offer laptops at more competitive prices. They are known for their fast response times, which is important for gamers who need quick updates on the screen to avoid motion blur.

Acer also offers laptops with IPS or VA panels, particularly in their higher-end and premium lines. While TN panels offer speed, they often have lower color accuracy, viewing angles, and contrast ratios compared to IPS or VA panels.
