Blue Screen of Death after changing registry keys for Ubuntu Installation on Acer Swift sf313-52

I'm trying to install Ubuntu alongside Windows on an Acer Swift sf313-52 after a factory reset. I followed the instructions here to change the registry keys so that I could safely switch from RST to AHCI: https://help.ubuntu.com/rst/

However, when I did this I got the blue screen of death, so I tried following the instructions (from the same page) to recover Windows, which didn't work.

However, I was able to just go back into the UEFI settings, switch back to RST, and then start Windows with no issues (but still can't install Ubuntu).

I looked again at the registry entries I had changed, and they had switched back to the original values (in both cases I had changed the second value from 3 to 0, but both were now back to 3).

I was able to install Ubuntu from the same USB drive on another machine (not an Acer) just before this. I also remember running into this same issue a couple of years ago when I first tried to install Ubuntu on this same Acer Swift, and the instructions from the page above worked then, as best as I can recall.

So why isn't it working now? Do I maybe need to make sure Windows is fully updated before attempting it? Or something else?

Yes, don't go in and start mucking around with the registry, just use Intel's IRST utility to turn it off, then switch to AHCI in the BIOS.
