SFG16-71 Stuck in boot loop after BIOS update. Need help

Hi,

I updated the BIOS version via this website (to the recent V1.10) and the laptop then found itself unable to boot up, stuck in the aforementioned loop. I could not even get it to boot using a USB windows recovery drive, as the laptop appeared to power down before reaching the necessary stage before starting again (and repeat).

Occasionally, with the USB boot drive not connected, I would succesfully arrive at the Windows Recovery Environment and be able to attempt one of the 'Advanced Options'. I tried the Startup Repair from here, system restore, various command prompts as suggested online etc but to no avail.

As I was about to give up, I again got access to the advanced recovery options and asked System Restore to show me even older restore points, and having selected the oldest one the laptop, to my surprise, booted up windows (at which point it strangely did not recognise my pin or fingerprint, though I was able to get a one time code emailed to me for the Windows login).

I am now in Windows, but terrified to allow the laptop to shut down for fear of finding myself once again in that startup repair loop.

Can anyone advise on how we can spot from here what was going wrong, and get some comfort that it is not going to happen again if I allow the laptop to shut down. I am happy to provide, with guidance, whatever system logs etc would be useful.

Hi, glad to hear you managed to recover an earlier saved Restore Point using the Windows Recovery disk. You did right and don't worry about it anymore. To recover from BSODs that's the best way, The Repair option never works. Instead of the Recovery Disk you can also interrupt the booting when you see the Acer logo 3 times by holding down the Power Button for 5 seconds after each boot, that will get the Recovery menu also unless the Recovery Partition on the boot drive is corrupted then only the Windows Recovery USB drive will work. Make sure to make a new Windows Recovery disk after each major Windows upgrade (24h2) and at least once a year.

Thanks Puraw, but maybe my description was unclear. I did not have the recovery disc connected when I eventually managed to restore and boot-up (the old restore was done in the WRE without the help of the recovery disc). At no point was the laptop able to boot using the recovery disc, as it appeared to power itself down before doing so - I had set the USD as number 1 boot option in BIOS and disabled the secure boot setting.

If the laptop is able to boot into the BIOS, then it can boot to the boot menu using F10, once the boot menu is enabled in the BIOS. It is disabled by default for security reasons. Likely the BIOS update changed some parameter that was required for Windows to load successfully. When that happens you can typically fix it with a boot to the BIOS, then a reset to factory with an F9, then save and exit with F10.

Update BIOS.
