Hello! I purchased an Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R3UB | 15.6" Full HD IPS Display | AMD Ryzen 3 3350U Quad-Core Mobile Processor | 4GB DDR4 | 128GB NVMe SSD | WiFi 6 | Backlit KB | FPR | Amazon Alexa | Windows 11 Home in S mode back in April of 2022. For various reasons, I just started using it Feb. '25. When I turned it on, all of the Windows updates downloaded and installed with no problem except for "2023-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 for x64-based Systems (KB5031358)". This one will download but installation fails every time and I end up with the little red dot in the task bar. I also downloaded the update separately and tried to install in by itself, but that didn't work either.

Any known fix for this? Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. Thanks for your help!

If you stored the laptop for 3 years without any periodical charging the battery will be depleted, replace the battery first. Reset BIOS with F9 in BIOS and F10 (save changes), turn off S mode in Widows11 (see link) and run Windows update trouble shooter. Try the updating again. The 2023-10 Cumulative Update is a common issue, but there are several steps you can take to try and resolve it.

First, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. This tool can automatically detect and fix some problems with Windows Update.

If the troubleshooter doesn't resolve the issue, you can try manually resetting the Windows Update components. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands one by one:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands one by one:
    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    net start cryptsvc

After running these commands, restart your computer and try updating again. If the problem persists, you might need to perform a system file check and repair any corrupted files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    sfc /scannow

These steps should help resolve the update issue. If you continue to experience problems, it might be best to contact Acer or Microsoft support for further assistance.

I hope this helps! If this was useful, please hit 'Yes' or 'Like'! Thanks! 😊
