I have one choice in BIOS for boot order (hard drive). I need to boot from USB flash drive to install an operating system. I have no DCrom drive.

When a laptop boots up, it lists only drives that have "boot" option enabled, like OS drives, OS install USB drives and such. So unless your USB is an install one, you won't see it.

Create bootable usb using Rufus in GPT partition.

To create a bootable USB drive with a GPT partition scheme using Rufus:

    1. Prepare the Environment: Connect your USB drive to your computer and open Rufus software.
    2. Select the ISO File: In Rufus, select the ISO file for the operating system you want to install.
    3. Choose GPT Partition Scheme: Under "Partition scheme," select GPT.
    4. Start the Process: Click "Start" to begin the process. Rufus will format the USB drive and create the bootable drive. Make sure you've backed up any important Data before proceeding
    5. .Wait for Completion: Once the process is complete, Rufus will display a "Ready" message, indicating that your bootable USB drive is ready to use

Welcome to the crowd :-) I have been into computers since like mid 90s. The older laptops used to list out all possible drives. In the newer ones you see only USB ports and none other, and since these could be used for just about anything, the BIOS selectively lists only ports with bootable drives under bootable options.
